"We were in room 29, it was spacious and even with screen windows it wasn’t too noisy from people nearby. The hammock on the porch was nice, and we got to see toucans in the tree by our front door. We also saw a huge iguana on the lawn, and a sweet orange cat.
The bathroom was also large and clean. The shower did not have a handheld but it was a rain shower and had hot water pretty quickly. The strange wooden rack in the bathroom proved very useful to lay out clothes to try and get them to dry. Which is almost impossible!
The tours offered by Mawamba were pretty good, worth their cost - we did the night walk - you go across the river by boat, the canoe tour (great guide named Bryan), and the Jaguar Trail. I’d recommend doing these with guides as you will absolutely miss a lot of animals without them. But also know they can only see so much if the animals aren’t out.
The front desk staff was not warm and welcoming but one of them was nice enough. The other was more interested in her cell phone than being helpful to guests.
The food at the restaurant was fine. The included breakfast had a made-to-order omelette bar.
Bring a poncho for wet adventures!
Overall we felt 2 full days and nights was just right!"
"What an amazing experience! I was skeptical at first with no A/C and minimal amenities, but I have to say I can’t imagine you’d see so many animals at one hotel. Food was good and rooms were clean. Would recommend for a great experience."
"I have never received better customer service than at Miss Junie’s. Nory and her staff are attentive and committed to hospitality. The rooms are very clean. The building and grounds are beautiful and old, worn by time, but with character. The afternoon ocean breeze is cooling and the beach is shaded in the late afternoon. There are old trees on the grounds where iguanas live and macaws visit. The property is also adjacent to the town and the river, and a short walk from the turtle conservatory. Nory and her family are committed to environmental stewardship and the community of Tortuguero."
"This was such a lovely stay. The rooms are a really generous size, with amazing views of the river and surrounded by incredible wildlife. You really are in the middle of it. It's also helpful that the airstrip is just on the other side of the river, making it super easy to get there and back (but with so few flights, it's not a disturbance). We had some incredible activities with the reception staff incredibly helpful and the guides super knowledgable and it's clear they love what they do. Manuel in particular was incredible. And even though it rained almost consistently (nothing anyone can do about that), as soon as we came back from activities, the staff were waiting with towels and drinks for us. They also had an abundance of wellies and ponchos, which were super helpful. The only thing that was a little more challenging were the restaurant opening times. As there's literally one restaurant, if you didn't eat before an evening activity or wanted a drink later in the evening (past 8:30pm), you didn't have any options and there was no one to serve you. Minor inconvenience for such a stunning location. And the wi-fi was brilliant, too. And the food was very good."
"Beautiful setting and extremely clean! The Hotel is very helpful over whats app. The buffet is tasty but quite basic. There is no AC in the rooms, just block a ceiling fan that wasnt very powerful- this was ok at night and we slept well but not very comfortable during the day. Overall a nice stay."
"The staff was amazing! Like unbelievably amazing!
Greeted at the dock, luggage taken care of, greeted with fresh watermelon juice, chef cooked such delicious meals (dessert included), housekeeping cleaned 2-3 times a day, cooper hooked us up with tours, everything was great and relaxing.
3 minute walk to the beach, 5 minute walk to the national park, 5 minute walk to the village. "
