Notes for the summer staff: The staff were and are, first and foremost, exceptional. Very well done!
This is a student accomodation during the term and then resnted as hotel rooms during the off season.
As such, my notes are for the regular operators of the building during student season are as follows:
1. Ensure that the sliding shower doors are measured correctly, as if the they are too long the door does not successfully contain the water splashing from the shower.
2. The door leading to the road accessible from the stairwell of building B and the courtyard, while convenient is on a hinge that ensures the door is closed and does so with a tremendous series of clanks. This, I am sure with some basic work can be arranged so as to ensure a close without giving the impression of an American refrigerator being dropped down an elevator shaft. Students may not have the most agency and set options when it comes to accomodations, but do deserve a place where in the can live without repeated and needless noise. And leaky shower doors.
That said, staff of the hotel side over the summer: flawless and lovely the lot of them!
Clean and well maintained site. Bare bones as far as the room but for our intentions, it was perfect. Lovely games room and wonderful to have laundry facilities on site. Staff were exceptionally friendly. Huge shout out to Amanda and Sienad for all their extra help.
Room was very hot, and you had to leave the windows open to keep the room cool, but it was very loud because students were chatting outside if the window.
The Argyl Broga house is well placed, within walking distance of St.Patrick's Street (where there are many shops, as well as a large McDonalds); the English Market (a quaint old food market); and Oliver Plunkeet street (lots of outdoor and indoor pubs and eating places - please try Quinlan's Seafood...excellent seafood chowder!). The property is well maintained, with an excellent coffee station in the reception. I stayed in one of the apartments with en suite bathrooms. The rooms are small (as one would expect in a hostel), but if you're primarily sleeping there at night and out during the day, that is fine. The shower cubicle, in particular, was much larger than one usually gets in such en suites, so that was nice.
Only one small note of caution and disappointment: On the Expedia site, there is no mention that the booking comes without access to the kitchen systems in the common area. In both other similar places I booked in Galway and Dublin, I was given full access to all kitchen amenities (fridge, oven, microwave, kettle) and utensils (as well as cutlery). Here I was told that was not included in the bill, and that I could therefore not use any of the kitchenette amenities. The front desk was also not inclined to be supportive - all I needed was some utensils (pan, plates, cups, cutlery), not a very big ask - and I did not get them. Made having physical access to the living room and kitchenette (a large, airy and otherwise nice space) pointless.
The location in central Cork City is excellent, with ready access to many sites of interest. Shandon and the Butter Exchange, the UCC and Fitzgeralds Park/Mardyke no more than a short walk away. The staff are friendly and if you need anything you have only to ask. There is a small gym, laundry and reading space as well as study space available, and tea/coffee is there to help yourself. Hospital, Church and Courthouse a minute or two away, as well as a selection of Pubs and Restaurants. The English Market is no more than ten minutes walk away for me, a less than able walker.
Transport links are OK, a short taxi ride to train and bus/coach stations.
Yes even the Council building and Cathedral are nearby. Very pleasant stay in good weather. No hob or oven, but there is a small microwave.
