Off the beaten track hidden cove
The word focara (Fòcara) is a dialect term of Salento, and other southern dialects, which indicates a bonfire of wood to burn. Currently the term is used to denote the particular traditional rite in use in almost all municipalities of Salento to create piles of fagots at the crossroads of the city and set him on fire on the eve of the liturgical feast of St. Anthony Abbot. Around this blazing pyre are used to hold back, to spend the evening, the families who built it. Where did this tradition has its origin is not certain: probably from ancient pagan rituals.
