Nice bolthole for one night. Received upgrade upon arrival which always improves the experience. Quiet part of the city ans walkable to many sights. Breakfast was one of best I have had in a hotel with great amount of choice and quality. Would recommend and stay again. Forgot the staff who were all excellent.

The location of Nira Caledonia is excellent, and I really wanted to love this hotel as it clearly has a lot of potential. We stayed in a Wee Room, which was perfectly fine for what we paid for. However, it was located in the attic and the stairs to reach it were extremely steep — managing four suitcases was a real challenge. It would have been helpful if, at check-in, a Wee Room on a lower or mid-floor could have been offered. Breakfast was unfortunately the main disappointment. On the first morning the chef had called in sick, so only a continental breakfast was available — this was actually very good, so no complaints there. The second morning, however, we waited nearly an hour for a cooked breakfast, while every other table was served before us. Our order was also mixed up, likely because the waitress didn’t write anything down. I received scrambled eggs instead of poached, and my partner received poached instead of scrambled. Simple steps like using a notepad and repeating the order back would easily avoid these issues. Overall, I can really see the potential here and genuinely wanted to like this place, but unfortunately it just didn’t quite deliver for us.

I did stay in the small room and the three flights of stairs were a bit much. But the room was so HOT. That is great for sleeping, but it should be easier to turn it down. I had to open a window. The shower was soooooo small and it had a huge contraption of a shower - just simplify and give us more room. I had dinner (bar menu) which was excellent. But then they had the regular menu and I literally could not find anything I wanted to eat. I wish I could haver ordered from the bar menu my last night. Some people like lighter dinners. The staff was fantastic. The room was great. I would stay there again - maybe not on the 3rd floor but only because it was so hot and the bathroom so small. But I would do a 4.5 stars.

Large lamps in the room had to be turned off at the socket on the wall. No light switches to turn the main lights off from the bed. No socket for the kettle near the tea/coffee station. Shower cubicle small for the size of the room and could do with a proper non slip tray. Extractor fan not working. Light switches main niggle. Oh pillows a bit flat.

All very nice. It’s olde worlde and packed full of charater. Such a nice change from modern hotels. Speedy check in with all staff being friendly. Our room on the bottom floor was spotless with great bedding etc. The breakfast was so good. We would definitely go back.
