Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you prepare well enough. We've made a list of essential travel tips that will get your Iraan escape started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane trip can be a great experience if you pack the right gear. First things first, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a clean set of clothes and a good book. Secondly, find a spot in your bag for your laptop, a charger, any daily medications and perhaps a quality neck pillow too. Lastly, be sure to take your passport, travel documents and some cash.

• While the list of banned items differs between air carriers, the general rule to follow is nothing flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes things like knives, scissors, fuel and fireworks. Sporting equipment like ice skates, and items that could injure passengers, such as swords and batons, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your top priority when choosing what to wear during your flight. Loose clothing is a sensible choice, as are enclosed shoes like sneakers.
• Caused by sustained periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clotting condition that can affect some passengers during long-haul flights. Lower your risks by drinking water, keeping your legs moving and wearing compression socks or tights.

• Security personnel first need to verify that you have a valid ID and travel documents before you're allowed to proceed any further. Have them ready for inspection.
• Your jacket, belt, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your earphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them before your turn arrives.
• All your electronic devices, including your phone and laptop, must also be separately scanned.
• Remove all gels and liquids from your carry-on luggage. They often need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit in a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• Lightweight sneakers are a sensible footwear choice as you're less likely to be required to remove them when passing through security. Boots and other heavy-style shoes are usually subjected to additional screening.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them in your checked baggage. They won't be allowed on board.
