Staufen lies at the foot of the Black Forest at the exit from the Münstertal. The Black Forest valley of Neumagen goes here directly over into the Rhine plain. The piedmont of the Black Forest is less distinct. North of the valley exit, the steeply rising old castle ruins dominates; to the southwest begins the hilly landscape of the Markgräflerland. Staufen lies on the border between two natural and economic areas: the Rhine plain up to the piedmont with its cultivation of grain, vineyards and vegetables; and the Black Forest, with its cattle and wood, and, until the 19th century, silver mines.
I love this little town about a 20 minute drive from Freiburg. This main pedestrian street has a small stream running down it and there are lots of cafes and shops to browse. We got some amazing Black Forest gateaux here from Cafe Decker.
Freiburg is a fantastic home base to explore the Black Forest in Germany. One of the most stunning views is from the top of Schauinsland. You can take a cable car, enjoy the views and do a bit of #hiking at the top.
One of the best things to do when hiking in Freiburg is taking the cable car to Schauinsland. In addition to the gorgeous view, there are loads of hiking trails at the top. It is 12 euro for a roundtrip ticket on the cable car.
