“Very unique. It's a step back in time. Don't expect modern resort but you will get friendly authentic service provided by local people who bend over backwards to fulfill your needs and interests. Dufur is a very small old rural historical town in, what some would call, the middle of nowhere. If you want seclusion and enjoy country walks or bike rides and meeting really interesting people the Balch Hotel is for you as it was for us. The people really are fantastic. “Cousins' was way better than it had any right to be. Yes, this is a basic motel, but it's a cut above the chains. Convenient location, affordable, and nice rooms with refrigerator, microwave, comfortable beds. The little things they chose made a big difference to our family road trip vacation: Comfy beds, quality coffee in the lobby refreshed throughout the day (and cookies, if you like that!). Pendleton blankets on the beds. Actual coffee mugs, Portland Roasting coffee, glass not……

“Interesting experience. There is no on-site staff, but the building is in excellent (restored) condition. You let yourself in with the door code and then you’re on your own. The on-site restaurant is not operating, so we drove a couple miles for dinner. We made breakfast from what was on site. Thankfully there was no noise from the railroad outside. We’ll be back.”
