Freundlicher Empfang und gute Stimmung im Pub, der zum Hotel dazu gehört. Einfache (ausreichende) Ausstattung der Zimmer, für eine Nacht ok. Ansonsten ziemlich ruhig, weil insgesamt nicht viele Gäste dort übernachtet haben. Am nächsten Morgen haben wir einfach den Schlüssel liegen lassen, weil sonst niemand da war. Frühstück wurde nicht angeboten. Insgesamt ein wenig spooky (der Pub war mal Schauplatz in einem Horrorfilm), von daher ein Ort mit Charakter, aber man sollte keine zu hohen Erwartungen haben.

There was a terrible smell of chips from the kitchen pervading the whole building I understand there will be new owners now they have some work to do as fundamentally this place could workwell

Abandoned night

I have left a review of this hotel. I booked using a bonus night. Impressed as i am with 98% of hotels booked via your site i have rarely been so dissapointed. I was travelling thorugh Dumfries and Galloway this hotel at a mid way stop over seemed ideally situated for our plan. Upon arrival at 1:45pm all the doors were locked there seemed to be no life in the hotel I knocked upon all doors and looked through the available windows... the net curtains of which were grey dirty and looked like they had never been cleaned.... the paint was peeling and seemed to have been on for 30 years or more. There was moss and plants growing out of the gutters And the hotel looked abandoned There was dirt on the doors that looked like it had been there years . As we were cold and hungry and hoping for a place to relax and get a shower we were upset that the doors were locked and no answer when knocked on the doors. We went to the gem museum nearby for a warm and some food Then returned to see if the doors were open They were not open .. . So we drove the 150 mile three hour journey home and aborted our final holiday plans. No one called to ask why we didnt checkin and i assumed therefore that the hotel was empty as i previously thought. I am completely dissapointed with my experience at the hotel i could not get into. There was a two star certificate in window but it looked old. The hotel from the outside looked nothing like the photo on your site. Regards ian Gregg

Large room with comfortable bed and good linen. Bathroom is long overdue a refurbishment: extractor fan does not work, moldy tiles, insects. Good strong, hot shower. Room faces street so some disturbance from vehicles. Excellent, large breakfast.

Fine for one night - probably not for a holiday

(I'm not sure if this will come out as a duplicate review, as previous attempts seem to have failed). The hotel is in need of an upgrade of decoration and facilities, but was comfortable for a one night stop. The staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast was very good

Uriges Altes Hotel

Nette Angestellte, nur für uns abends noch gekocht. Großes schönes Bett und Aussicht auf das Dorf. Morgens kam ein Koch nur für uns und zauberte das Frühstück. Das Hotel ist aus dem 18.Jahrhundert, richtig urig. Gerne wieder.

Lovely hotel staff

I've been there for just one night. In the morning I met the women who was taking care for the rooms. She was so lovely and helped me a lot with searching for the bus to Glasgow. She even brought me the stuff in forgot in the room to the bus stop!! She made my day that actually started not that good into a much better day! Thanks!

Poco pulito

Si tratta di un vecchio hotel con un rumoroso pub al piano terra.Le condizioni igieniche sono piu che precarie specie nel minuscolo bagno.In camera disponibile bollitore impolverato e tazze scarsamente pulite per preparare un the o caffe.Personale tuttavia molto cortese ed estremamente disponibile.

Pleasent Surprise

I was greeted by a friendly welcome and surprised when I was offered help to bring my luggage to the room (there was no lift) as it was the first time on the trip that I had.The Hotel is very clean and it's obvious alot of effort has been put into upkeep of the old building. I slept well and was presented with an excellent full breakfast, haggis, pudding, mushrooms and all. I couldn't fault it.

Pleasant Overnight Stay

I booked an overnight stay in the single ensuite room of the Ellangowan as I was doing an event in Wigtown for the weekend. It was the cheapest option I could find as I just needed a place to sleep rather than a base for sightseeing etc. As with any little local pub, my entrance caused the usual 'stranger' reaction but it takes more than that to bother me and given the hotels claim to fame from the Wicker Man film, actually seemed quite apt! My room was clean, comfortably and given it was a Saturday night, barely any noise from the bar below. The ensuite provided a clean and hot shower in the morning before a fantastic full Scottish breakfast. I certainly didn't encounter any of the issues that previous reviewers have had and would be happy to return and for a longer stay too.

The place was absolutely filthy and a complete waste of money. The lights in the bedroom and the bathroom didn't work, there were at least 5 old cobwebs on the walls and pictures, they had no chef that evening so I had to drive 10 iles to the nearest restaurant. The bathroom wasn't clean and had hair cobwebs and dust on the floor and the toilet made a long groaning noise for over 5 minutes after being flushed. No Wifi in the rooms meant I had to go to reception to pick up and send emails as I was staying there on business. It's the second worst place I've stayed in in 14 years on the road. Don't stay there.

Friendly , good food.

Very friendly staff made me feel welcome. Allthough very tired and dated decorations spoilt the overall impression the bed was comfortable and clean. Meals were excellent but not available on Sunday and Monday nights. As the hotel is also the local pub it is full of local characters who are both interesting and very welcoming.

Bad choice

The hotel room was very dirty and unsafe there was loose floorboards beds falling apart yellow damp marks leaks from the roof and very dirty Windows and rope hanging from the guttering looking very bad and off putting, silverfish in the shower. Also got a dead fly in the cooked breakfast, hair in the dinner and mouldy toast and in the first morning fire alarm went off and the staff member didn't know how to put it off. I don't know how the hotel has a 2star cause i wouldn't give it one definitely wouldn't go back and it was a disappointing choice

Budget stopover in Scotland

We wanted somewhere to stay on our way to our holiday in Scotland, It fitted the bill perfectly, the hotel is clean and the breakfast was fantastic! . I don't know how they do it for the price which was very reasonable.

Good Value Hotel

Nice clean, spacious room though some parts of the hotel are still in need of a spruce up. The staff are lovely and couldn't be more helpful and friendly. The food was very nice and extremely plentiful. Not posh but perfectly comfortable and very welcoming. Would definitely stay here again.

Itchy & Scratchy Show

We only stayed the 1st night as the rooms were filthy and we were itching. Had to move to another hotel after phoning the hotel twice and getting the man who runs the bar. Would not recommend this hotel
