Good:
This home is lake front and offers beautiful views to the west. Although it's small, it seems to offer ample space on the inside. There is a lovely master bedroom on the first floor, and three additional bedrooms on the second floor. It's also tastefully decorated and furnished throughout. All furnishings seemed to be in great shape and showed little wear.
In my opinion, this home is also in a great location. Although it is about a 10 minute drive to Geneva, it is close to some of my favorite wineries. It's located in an area that is not densely populated, offering a pleasant rural atmosphere.
Bad:
Although this is a newer home, it is beginning to show signs of wear. There is obvious sheetrock patchwork, with the largest patch located on the kitchen ceiling. In addition, some of the walls are showing marks and gouges, which also indicates signs of abuse. The outside furniture seemed sporadically placed or thrown by the wind, and left in their final resting place or overlooked. To me, it's another obvious sign of neglect and a lack of attention to detail.
The lot that the house sits on is small and in close quarters with neighboring homes. The driveway is only wide enough for a single vehicle, and can only accommodate 3 or 4, depending on their size. The road that it's on is also too narrow for street parking.
My biggest (and most inexcusable) complaint was that a large piece of the roof above an upstairs bedroom window was peeling off. Due to the endless wind here, the loose piece of attached shingles repeatedly lifted and slammed against the plywood roof, causing a very loud banging sound throughout the house. This noise was relentless and non-stop. It was as if the roof was under construction. As a result, our enjoyment was hindered and none of my guests were able to sleep. When we advised the owner, he advised that he was unaware of the issue, only offering an empty apology. It is impossible that anyone who prepared this house prior to our stay could have been unaware of the issue. Given the rental price, it is utterly inexcusable.
Conclusion:
Despite my generous two-star rating, this property does has a lot to offer. If it were not for the roof issue coupled with the owner's empty apology, I would have given this house a higher rating. I expected better or partial compensation.
