I have no idea how In The Wind Hostel gets good ratings. Maybe mostly men stay here and avoid the brunt of it, but as a solo female traveler, this was hands down the worst hostel experience I’ve ever had.
The owner’s behavior was unhinged. He has a scary pattern of going from 0 to 100 out of nowhere, flying off the handle, and then snapping right back to a weird 0 like nothing happened. My first morning, I accidentally walked through an open door into his kitchen. He blew up and screamed in my face like I was robbing him, only to flip a switch two seconds later and casually ask if I wanted breakfast.
Later, he was running outside screaming, cursing, and calling people names just for briefly stopping out front—even though there was no no-parking sign and they politely moved. He was literally sitting outside waiting for someone to park so he could snap. On top of that, the place has a strict curfew where you’ll literally be locked out on the street if you're late.
I felt so unsafe that I forfeited over $100 just to leave early for another hostel, and it was worth every penny. It feels like his non-refundable policy exists because he knows people will want to escape. When I left, he didn't care why—he just kept my money and falsely accused me of stealing a blanket.
If you value your safety, please do not stay here.
