  • It takes 1,000 butterflies to weigh one pound (.45kg), and the branches on this tree were sagging under the weight. The monarch colony here was quite different than at the more popular El Rosario sanctuary. 40 minutes outside Zitacuaro, near El Capulin, we chartered a couple of tiny mountain horses to take us up the rugged path to view the colony. The monarchs were clustered within a ravine, swirling around a few choice pine trees in search of sunny roosts. Whenever the sun went behind a cloud the butterflies scrambled into the air and back to the safety of the nucleus, knowing that settling down for the night outside the warmth of the colony would mean certain death.

The new rooms don't have the best view but are in excellent condition. The Old rooms, which are the most expensive, are extremely hot. I would return to the new section because the hotel has many other communal area views. The service is excellent. The Spa has great therapists. The food is good and offers healthy options.

We very much enjoyed our 2 night stay at El Santuario! The location is breathtaking. We went Monday through Wednesday, so the resort itself was pretty empty. We felt like we had the whole place to ourselves! The room was clean, the view was gorgeous, and the bed was comfortable. We went to the Spa and felt total bliss. It was magical. For any non-Spanish speaking travelers who come here, it's important to know some basic Spanish because we only interacted with a few staff that spoke English. Overall, we would highly recommend El Santuario to anyone who is looking for a serene spot to relax and reset. Valle de Bravo, Mexico is a gorgeous area and while we didn't leave the resort, we would have absolutely loved to explore the little lake town.

Pools were old and dirty. Very noisy hotel and they don't have Air Conditioning. inconvenient location. Room service food was horrible. Do not recommend it at all. Staff did what they could but to no avail. Great massage! Not worth the price.
