  • The Church of Santa Lucia, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, is located on the hill of the same name in the city of Viana do Castelo. The church was built on the site of a small medieval chapel, known as a pilgrimage site for people with eye diseases. The construction of the temple lasted from 1904 to 1959. The eclectic-style Miguel Ventura Terra project combines neo-romanticism, neo-Gothic and Byzantine architecture. It is generally accepted that the architect was inspired by the forms of the Sacre Coeur Basilica in Paris. To the foot of the church at a height of 195 meters above sea level there is a line of a funicular built in 1923. Tourists can take the elevator to the observation deck under the very dome of the church. A panoramic view of the Lima River valley, mountains and the Atlantic Ocean opens from the platform. In 1927, National Geographic magazine named this species the third most beautiful in the world.

The property is fully renovated and in great condition. Location is excellent since it is right downtown. Public parking is covered and right next to the hotel. Breakfast buffet was quite good, except the coffee (Nespresso), but I am quite picky about my coffee.

Excellent stay. Location was convenient, quiet, room was very clean and the included breakfast had a good variety of options. There was no problem leaving bags in a locked area both before and after checkout. I've recommended for friends if they visit.

I’m just not a huge fan of a room that looks into an internal courtyard as I find them a bit darker and claustrophobic. It didn’t help that I was staying at the hotel during bad weather. Bathroom had a damp smell, from lack of ventilation. It was a good size and good shower though. Bed mattress was a little firm. The Turkish bath element was also not what I was expecting and was a sad looking little room. Overall wouldn’t rave about this hotel, but it was fine for a one night stay.

Great hotel, change the bathroom doors please.

The people that were at the front desk were very nice! The beds were clean! They should replace the Shower and toilet doors with ones that are not see-through.It was in a good location.

This was a delightful discovery. The description of the hotel's location didn't do it justice and the facilities were very good. The main challenge was accessing it via car, as the streets are very narrow, but once located, the parking was straightforward. It is a good value place and well worth checking out in this lovely Portuguese costal town.

A wonderful Gem

This place is unbelievably beautiful and wonderful. The hotel uses nautical flags instead of room numbers as a nod to the town’s history. The rooms are large, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The breakfast was a very good European style breakfast. What really makes this place is the staff. Albert checked us in and then gave us a brief history of the hotel and explained different sites around town. After walking around a bit, we promptly booked a second night. This will be my go to when coming to Viana do Castelo

no privacy in toilet & shower

The building & room was in excellent condition. The service was friendly & attentive. The breakfast was had good variety & fresh buns. The only strange thing was the shower & toilet stalls in the room weren’t completely private. They both had frosted glass doors which didn’t extend fully to the ceiling so you can hear when someone was using the toilet and we had to let each other know when we were showering so we could step in & out of the shower with some privacy. Perhaps it’s a European thing??
