HISTORY of HERMANN MO:
Hermann: “German in Every Particular”
It is commonly believed that the Hermann area’s resemblance to the Rhine Valley prompted scouts from the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia to choose the site for a colony on the American frontier.
Dismayed at how quickly their countrymen were being assimilated into American society, the Philadelpia Germans dreamed of building a new city in the “Far West” that could and would be “German in every particular.”

In 1837 school teacher George Bayer, who was appointed to serve as the society’s agent, traveled to Missouri and purchased 11,000 acres of the steepest, most rugged terrain to be found anywhere on the Missouri River. It was a beautiful, if highly impractical, site for a town.

Meanwhile, back in Philadelphia city planners were mapping out a grand new city, undeterred by their total ignorance of the actual terrain. On paper, Hermann was flat, with spacious market squares and sweeping boulevards. Thinking big, they made their city’s main street 10 feet wider than Philadelphia’s.

When the first 17 settlers stepped off the last steamboat of the season into what one writer described as “a howling wilderness,” their starry-eyed idealism died on the spot. Some were furious to discover that the Hermann lots they had purchased back in Philadelphia were what today’s residents jokingly refer to as “vertical acreage.” The fact that the town survived at all is a testament to German determination and hard work.

Making the best of a bad situation, the Germans took their cue from Mother Nature and planted vineyards on the rocky hillsides, where wild grapevines grew with tangled abandon. A decade later, steamboats brought St. Louis visitors to Hermann’s first Weinfest, where they enjoyed more than their share of sweet Catawba wine and marveled at the grapevine-covered hills.

By the turn of the century, Hermann’s winemakers had become wildly successful. Stone Hill Winery had grown to be the second largest winery in the country and was winning gold medals at World’s Fair competitions around the globe. The town’s numerous vintners were producing an incredible three million gallons of wine a year.
In its glory days Hermann was a rollicking river port with a tavern on every corner and the largest general store between St. Louis and Kansas City.

The party ended with the one-two knockout punch of anti-German sentiment provoked by World War I and the Volstead Act of 1919. Prohibition sent Hermann reeling into the Great Depression a full decade before the rest of the country. The only silver lining was that economic ruin put the town into a time warp-there was simply no money to modernize the old buildings.

Today Hermann’s Old-World charm attracts visitors in search of the quiet pleasures of an earlier era. Much of downtown is a historic district where brick homes from the 1800s hug the sidewalk in the traditional German style. More than 150 buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Idle for nearly 50 years after Prohibition, Hermann’s wineries are once again the main tourist attraction. The seven wineries in and around Hermann account for more than a third of the state’s total production.

This was our 2nd stay in this house. It is full of history and charm.

We stayed here for the Tour of Hermann Gravel Race. It was perfect for us! Plenty of places to sleep and we used the basement cellar to store and work on our bicycles! It was great! Casey’s was walking distance for the last minute necessities or morning donuts. I would make note that the frying pans could be replaced. The nonstick coating has worn off probably from the dishwasher so I had a small issue cooking breakfast (thankful for Casey’s being so close ha!) The waffle iron was an absolute blessing the following morning! It was a great surprise to see that was an option! My daughter did wish there was some games or coloring books but overall it was all 5 stars for us! Thanks again!

We had a lovely couples trip to the Kaiser House Inn. It's on the other side of town but it made for a nice walk when needed. The trolley picked us right in front if we weren't in the mood to walk. The property itself was very tidy, renovated nicely with plenty of space. We only used two of the three bedrooms which put it on the pricier side. The cellar was a fun bonus space for karaoke night. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

My husband and I are both in our 60's and active. We enjoyed the house, but the amount of stairs and the outside stairs needs to be emphasized in the description. Also the bathroom door in the master bedroom would not latch. The overall feel was authentic and really added to our trip. We utilized the entire house and loved the many different spaces for relaxation and visiting. We would stay here again. The town had many historic and interesting things to do from wineries to museums.

The house is 150 years old. It was about a mile from the trolly stop. If you have problems with stairs, this is not the property for you. The bedrooms and bathrooms were remodeled.

This is our second time staying here. My husband and I travel with my parents and we always have a great time in Hermann. We absolutely love this house! Lots of privacy for separate couples and a great space to gather in the living room, kitchen and wine cellar. We are already talking about our next trip!

Do not let the outside sway you because the inside is absolutely beautiful. We truly enjoyed our stay at this home and the old wine cellar was an added bonus. The trolley picked us up right at the doorstep which was so convenient. We will definitely stay again if we visit this lovely town!

What an amazing house for our Girl’s Weekend with 8 Friends. The house was full of charm & spacious for us all! The additional seating in the Wine Cellar was the perfect place for us to hangout & have fun together. We definitely will be booking this house for our next trip to Hermann!

We had a girls weekend in Hermann, MO and had the best time. There is so much to do! When we arrived at the home we were shocked how big it was on the inside. It was beautifully set up and had everything we needed. The beds were very comfortable, as well as the couches. The kitchen has a very homey/gathering feel and the cave, basement area was amazing. I would highly recommend a stay at this home. I would also recommend if you are going out to use the trolley which will pick you up from the home and take you wherever request for a small fee that covers all day. The house was also in a great location!

This house is amazing! It has charm, beauty, and convenience! Four of us “older ladies” loved every minute in this home. There are a few stairs here and there but once you get used to them they were easy to navigate! It was up-to-date with modern conveniences but holds a rustic charm. You will not be disappointed!

Place was much older than we thought. It was clean. Stairs everywhere and no handrail outside. We could definitely and done without the plug ins. Didn’t realize the third bedroom was in the bedroom, the place was very clean.
