The huge castle of the 11th century, which was often besieged and survived for centuries, was rebuilt in the 18th century as a baroque castle and now serves as a museum and tourist attraction. Znojmo Castle was originally a wooden structure built by Przemyslid Bretislav I, Duke of Bohemia, and built around 1080. It was intended to replace the old castle, which was located through the Granice Valley, as part of an attempt to strengthen the defense. along the Dye River against the Austrian attack.
