The Tavern is right at the center of the town, on a busy corner with no easy drop off point. The main business is the (CAMRA award winning) pub downstairs, which specializes in real ale and gin, attracting a lively clientele. There are a handful of rooms upstairs, accessed through a side door and steep stairs. Ours was squeaky clean, with an eclectic mix of furniture including a wardrobe with 3 locked drawers (intriguing) crammed round the bed, and a huge bathroom which may have been designed and installed by an enthusiastic amateur.
We had no problem with an early arrival, were greeted warmly and handed keys to our room and the street door. Breakfast (served in the bar) was generous, freshly cooked and tasty. The bar serves lunches, but the only evening with food is Wednesday, which is pie night. Friday is live music, and if the windows are open, you’d best hope it’s music you like.
Overall, it was exactly what we needed: a nice, good value base for a few days, and we liked it a lot.
