• It's easy — first, put in your passport, important documents, cash and medications. Next, you'll want some in-flight entertainment to help pass the time. A juicy book and a tablet filled with your favourite movies are some wonderful options. If you plan to take a short snooze, a quality neck pillow and a pair of noise-cancelling headphones will also be useful. Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of prohibited items can differ between air carriers, the general rule to follow is avoid carrying anything flammable, sharp or explosive. • Want to bring along your favourite hand cream? As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a zip-lock bag, you can keep it with you in your carry-on.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several valuable minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on sneakers are usually not.
• Knives and other sharp items are not allowed in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so pack them safely away in your checked bags.
