I was visiting new found friends on the Wind River Indian Reservation when I unexpectedly stumbled across this. Since I had read so much about her, I was thankful to have made this discovery. Sacajawea, helped lead Lewis and Clark's expedition to the Pacific Ocean.

If you are driving through Fort Washakie make sure to stop and see the grave of Sacajawea and her son. Located not far off the highway in a lovely cemetery, this is an easy, quick excursion and a great place to stretch your legs and get a little US history. Her grave is located just up the hill from the parking area.
Named after Chief Washakie in 1878 of the Shoshone tribe making the fort the only U.S military outpost named after a Native American. The fort remained a military outpost until 1909 when it was decommissioned and turned over to the Shoshone Indian Agency. The graves of Washakie and Lewis and Clark Expedition guide Sacajawea are located on the grounds of the fort. The site lies within the present-day Wind River Reservation...
