  • This will ever be known as the chateau of Josephine Baker. She had been a singer of international renown with an extraordinary career. Born in the States in 1906, she emigrated to France and became a citizen in 1937 when she married a Jew, but not before knowing the street life in America where she’d had to sleep in cardboard shelters and scavenge in garbage bins. For ten years she was the lead in the Folies Bergeres, and admired by all who saw her. Shirley Bassey once said, “I swear in all my life I have never seen, and probably never shall see again, such a spectacular singer and performer." During WWII She won the Croix de Guerre for her work with the French Resistance. When the Germans invaded France she moved to the chateau where she helped Belgian refugees and ultimately adopted 12 children. She was the first Afro-American to star in a major motion picture (Zouzou) and was the only female speaker in the civil rights march to Washington with Martin Luther King and was offered the lead in the movement when he was assassinated but she declined. When the builders refurbishing the chateau sent her almost broke, Grace Kelly, a close friend, offered her accommodation on the Riviera.

We had a wonderfull time in this charming house. Nice stay and host. Bruno was very friendly and helpfull, and discrete. The kitchen and the house is wel equipped and the house gives what it says in the description. It's situated realy calm in a nice nature. The pool is nice and deep enough to stay cool... The master bedroom is very nice. However we would recomend to upgrade the cleanliness of the house. My room, nearby the pool was simply not clean enough. Dust, spiderwebs, closet not clean. Also some of the kitchenmaterial could use a cleaning. The bathrooms are ok, without more. Belves is a charming village nearby. Sarlat, the city in the neighbourhood is overcrowded, and should be avoides in high season. Nice markets in the neigbhourhood enough... We were with a group of 5 adults and enjoyed our holliday.

Mooie woning met mooi zwembad en een mooie en rustige omgeving. Helaas viel het weer tijdens ons verblijf in september wat tegen. De toegang tot de woning is altijd via trapjes/treden. In de omgeving zijn vele mooie grotten. Voor de boodschappen was de dichts bij zijnde supermarkt in Siorac de Perigord, afstand ca km met een zeer groot assortiment.

De aankomst was goed en over de eigenaar valt er niks negatiefs te zeggen. Het huis was wel zijn geld niet waard. Het zwembad en boordstenen zijn dringend aan renovatie nodig. 1 slaapkamer en douche was goed maar de andere slaapkamers en douche's waren zeker dit geld niet waard. Vorig jaar voor het zelfde geld een huis voor 8 personen met zwembad in Languedoc gehuurd en dat was toch van een ander niveau. Ik geef als vakantiegevoel een redelijk omdat we in een mooie omgeving en prachtige natuur waren. Ik zou dit huis in deze staat nooit meer huren.

Authentiek en mooi huis, voorzien van alle moderne gemakken (vaatwasser, wasmachine, koelkast, vrieskast etc.). Het huis is karakteristiek en vol met oude foto's en kunst (of is het kitsch). Tevens is er een glas serre aanwezig die ruim is, hier kan je eten / spelletjes doen als het minder weer is en toch het buitengevoel hebben. De slaapkamers zijn ruim van opzet en leuk ingedeeld. Een van de drie douches kan wel wat renovatie gebruiken maar het is goed te doen. Privacy genoeg voor zeker 4 stellen. Zwembad is meer dan geweldig, ruim en veilig af te sluiten middels een hek met kind onvriendelijk slot. Het is een ruim zwembad en het diepste gedeelte (meer dan de helft) is 2 meter of meer. Het zwembad wordt door de eigenaar schoongehouden. De omgeving is betoverend, je zit privé en met een uitzicht over bos en berg. In de nacht is de Melkweg te bewonderen. Het dichtstbijzijnde supermarkt ligt op zo'n 8 kilometer. Warm welkom door de eigenaar. Deze bracht ongevraagd tomaten (lagen met een briefje voor de deur in de ochtend).
