  • The Royal Botanical Gardens were a great place to visit large spaces for a picnic and beautiful trees and shrubs. The avenues of palm trees are spectacular and the fernery such a lovely, shady place to escape the heat. Our favourite part by far are the trees the fruit bats call home; listen, and look up – you'll ear them chattering, and see them hanging upside down with their furry bodies turned to the sun, every so often you'll see one or two stretch their wings, or even fly from one roost to another. These bats, unlike most bats, fly by sight not radar – something I didn't know until I visited this most beautiful park. #localsecrets

  • Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as Temple of the Buddha Tooth in English, is a UNESCO heritage site, and a popular place to visit for newly weds. It was awfully packed over the full moon weekend (would not recommend visiting during this period)! This pavilion-like structure at the front Paththirippuwa, or Octagon. It is a symbol of identity in Kandyan Architecture. In the olden days, the king would stand there to address his citizens who were gathered in front of him. The golden roof behind stands over the Buddha tooth relic that this temple is famous for.
