"Loved the secluded location within walking distance of the southern end of Lake Windmere. The cottage was smart and very clean, and well equipped, but we were stumpted on how to adjust the settings on the upmarket oven (a manual in kitchen drawer would have helped). We found that we had to be vigilant about the step in dark slate floor between bedrooms and kitchen/lounge (we used a bit of white cardboard to visually remind ourselves.) Had a great stay at The Bothy, we highly recommend it "

Shap Wells Hotel

2/10 Terrible

"DO NOT STAY HERE. UNSAFE I would not recommend this hotel. Our stay was disappointing from start to finish and well below acceptable standards. On arrival, we were given a cold, dark room that smelled musty, had dirty access steps, a window that would not close, and no electricity. We were initially told a room change was impossible and were only moved after further complaints, wasting much of our evening. The restaurant was equally poor. Menus had no prices, staff could not provide clear pricing, and we were only told after ordering that drinks were cash only, leaving us with tap water. My burger arrived burnt, and management offered no apology when the issue was raised. Customer service throughout was dismissive. Concerns were met with indifference, and obtaining complaint details was unnecessarily difficult. The most serious issue occurred around 3am when the fire alarm sounded. Guests evacuated without guidance, as there was no visible management presence, no instructions, no roll call, and no reassurance during the 30-minute wait outside. The apparent lack of an emergency procedure was alarming and left guests feeling unsafe. The next morning, several guests said repeated fire alarms and poor management responses were common. Despite multiple opportunities, management offered no meaningful apology or acknowledgement. Overall, the accommodation, food, customer service, and handling of a serious safety incident fell far below expectations."

Lindeth Howe Hotel

"We have visited Lindeth Howe twice before and were delighted each time. Unfortunately on this occasion there were many issues that spoiled our stay. We chose to discretely discuss our experience with reception on departure and emailed the account to the hotel with a promise of a response. We had no response a week later, so here are the key issues. Very poor quality bed, with gap and step in height between the two sides. Evening meals were poor in quality and over priced. I was quite insulted by the waiter when told that I didn’t qualify for a bread roll with my meal, (of near £100 for two). The wine was not of good quality and in fact was 3x the cost of the same product I could purchase on eBay. Diners were set too close together and the background music was too loud. The breakfast table and condiment holder was dirty. The breakfasts were not hot and the overnight oats had run out. Poor room servicing when requested. Dirty towels supplied and sanitary bin not emptied. So in all quite a disappointing stay. We will not be recommending Lindeth Howe to friends any more."

Lakeside Hotel & Spa

"The hotel is well located to visit Windermere attractions and our room had excellent lake views. The majority of the staff were very helpful and excellent at their jobs however there were the odd one or two who were a bit abrupt. The spa pool and steam room was excellent, everything worked and was very clean however the changing rooms could be upgraded, the addition of swim suit spinners and body lotion would be good especially as there was no place to dry the swimming kit in the room. Our room was tired, one of the window sashes was broken so it would barely open to let in fresh air. There was no in room safe, the bed was small and pillows hard. The carpet needed a good clean and the paint work touching up. There was no grab handle in the bath and as the shower was over the bath not a walk in this was quite difficult so we used the spa walk in sowers."
