It's about 10 mins walk from Times Square and the Empire Station Building, and about 2 minutes from Penn Station so it is excellently centrally for the sights in Manhattan and transport and subway including JFK airport links. You can get to a lot of places within walking distance easily.
But the downside of that is that it is on Eight Avenue and so it is not quiet. I was on the 17th floor (there are I think 28 floors) and could hear traffic noise throughout the day and evening, particularly when drivers sound their horns and starts off a chorus! This is not particularly disturbing for being in the room or sleeping, but if you are looking for a quiet hotel with no traffic noise, this isn't the one for you.
It is brilliant for it's price and location for the sights but there is no escaping the location is noisy so be aware of it, not an issue with the hotel itself, it's where it is. I used earplugs for sleeping and did not get woken up in the night at all by any traffic noise so it is manageable.
I travelled alone as a female and did not feel unsafe in the area at any point, even coming back after a show at night.
Would recommend for it's location, but if you are concerned by noise and want somewhere quiet outside the hustle and bustle, then you really need to look at a different area of New York as everywhere in this location will be noisy from the traffic noise.
