This was the second time my husband and I stayed at Trailside Hotel, and unfortunately this was a drastically different experience than the first. Upon arrival, the door to our room (room 101) was left opened which we thought was odd. After being in the room with the door closed for a while, we noticed a musty smell starting to fill the room. Each time we would leave the room and come back, the smell would be even stronger and it began to smell like a sweaty gym sock. We thought of all possibilities and eventually realized that it was coming from the AC unit on the wall. We found on Google that there is something called “dirty sock syndrome” which is a musty, foul odor released by an HVAC system that happens when mold, bacteria, and dirt accumulate on the evaporator coil. The second morning my husband woke up with a sore throat and we’re just hoping that we don’t develop more symptoms in the days to come. I just wanted to write this review to say that no one should be staying in room 101 until the AC unit is professionally cleaned or replaced. I can also see this being a perpetual issue in the future since this room does not have any windows and does not have a fan in the bathroom/shower too allow for adequate air flow.
