The Shinkansen comprises of 8 cars, 12 or 16 cars. Generally, the main route from Tokyo to Hiroshima is covered by trains of various speed. Nozomi is the fastest (hence most expensive) but JR passes don't allow travel on Nozomi except the Kansai Area Wide Pass. The Hikari or Kodomo trains are not slow by any mean except slower than Nozomi.
