Was only there for a night and it was a lovely place. Stayed in a private room for 3 and it reminded me of a cute apartment. Friendly staff who were more than willing to help us out. Conveniently next to a train station as well, so really easy to go to other parts of town. Thanks again for everything!
Stefan and Daniel were great hosts. They are friendly, inviting and building a great culture for travelers. Whether it’s your first time in Osaka or you’re a frequent visitor, Backstage is a great place to make new friends. It’s also a bonus that they serve the best expression martini’s in all of Osaka.
Thank you guys for your hospitality and retrieving my parcel while I was in Kyoto!
I unfortunately would not recommend this place due to the presence of bedbugs, and the owner’s response in dealing with it. We did get our money back, which I’m grateful for, as we left only 4 or 5 hours into our stay, at about 3am.
I noticed a bad smell immediately but assumed it was one of the dormmates… The black sheets struck me as odd and sketchy, but I slept anyways. My friend woke up with bed bugs on him.. and we rushed out.
I had unpacked my stuff under my bunk (also, not a ton of room to do that) and in that short time I had picked up so many that I had to get rid of some stuff, including my big backpack. Despite admitting to finding some bugs in our bunk after leaving, the owner insisted that a treatment had been done prior to our arrival, so it was not possible for any bed bugs to survive into adulthood(?). We had adult bed bugs on us and our stuff.
I was accused of having brought them there, and blamed for my alert costing them unnecessary money in inspections…? I contacted our other stays, and they provided proof of clean inspections, so, no bugs at our only 2 other places that we’d stayed in our week prior to Backstage…
Anyway. The staff I dealt with upon arrival were really nice, and the bar was cool, but overall I would definitely not recommend this spot…
The bar at the bottom is lit. It feels like a modern version of a Tavern. The staff are really nice, and very helpful. The guy who checked me in spoke Spanish, English, Japanese and I think also French, so if you can read this, you'll be fine.
The neighborhood is pretty central to Osaka, I was able to walk to Dottonbori, Kuramon Market and Osaka Castle (the other direction). It's on a main road, and there's two train stations and multiple convince stores are very close.
The actual accommodations are what you'd expect for a hostel. I was in the dormitory, so I can't speak for the private room(s), but the bedding was nice and comfortable. The mattress was a futon style on a wooden (not tatami) frame, so it felt a bit thin. But overall it was fine. The shower is very nice, but there's only one.
Overall 4/5 stars for the experience + price. I'll probably stay here again next time I'm in Osaka
I was assaulted in my sleep in the mixed dorm by someone who appeared to be there with a small group that was buddy-buddy with the bar manager. I'm not suggesting anyone else was in on it, but it did mean I didn't feel safe making a complaint, so I just left alone in tears in the early hours of the morning before anyone else woke up, and continued to have related anxiety for the rest of my trip. Price, service and location were otherwise fine, cleanliness and comfort only so-so. Based on my experience I can't say I would recommend it to solo travellers of either gender.
