El Capitan Hotel
10/10 Excellent
"We did not expect to find such an excellent hotel experience in Merced, but here it is! We decided Merced was our half-way stop between Tahoe and SoCal, so we found this place by chance, and didn't expect much since it wasn't very expensive-- plus it was about 105ºF when we arrived. (And we had to work a little to find the entrance from their parking garage.) Inside, the A/C was working well, the staff were all very nice, and there was a little sign welcoming our dog- plus a water bowl! The hang out area in the lobby is really cool, with a bar and restaurant right there next to check-in (we got food to go when we left in the morning). It's a cute little downtown area of Merced, with shops, and a short walk to civic center park. Freight trains seem to run regularly through Merced, but they didn't bother us in the room. The room itself was not big, but it was well designed and attended to, clean, with soap that actually didn't have an annoying fragrance. If we ever need to pass through Merced again, we will definitely stay here!"

"Location was chosen to be close to Yosemeti. The hotel was nice, but the breakfast the typical bland. Buildings are older but in good condition and clean."

"Good spot if you can’t find anything closer to the Yosemite entrance. Better than Mariposa Lodge, IMO. Clean. Easy to get on the way to YNP. It’s still far from the park tho. Worth it to find something closer if you can afford a few extra bucks. The distance does take a toll for a 4 day trip. If 1 or 2 days, the distance is bearable for someone that is fit enough for the almost 1hr drive from YNP."
