One-of-a-kind! Former Schoolhouse turned mansion for rent! The entire place!!
Welcome to the Grindstone Schoolhouse LLC.
This historic building was built in 1906 and fully remodeled in the 1990s into an inn with 5 private bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom (or two)! At nearly 10,000 sq ft total, the areas are very spacious and perfect for your large group to gather.
The top floor Master Suite has a new King mattress, a twin bed, his and hers bathrooms, and it’s own kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven and coffee maker. The bell tower extends from the Master Suite and has a futon and a great view of the countryside.
On the second floor you’ll find four large bedrooms, each with a private bathroom. Two of the rooms have two queen beds and walk-in kitchenettes with a seating area. The other two bedrooms have one queen bed each. Every room has a TV, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, and coffee pot.
The Main floor features an 1100 sq ft Great Room, fully equipped kitchen, and dining room/den. There is also a half bath and laundry room. The finished basement has a TV, pool table, air hockey table, foosball table, dartboard and poker table.
Outside there is a wraparound deck, fire pit, and lots of room to run around!
The Grindstone Schoolhouse is located 4.5 miles from downtown Port Austin, MI, and just a half-mile from historic Grindstone City.

Plenty of room for our multigenerational family group. Bedrooms were spacious & quiet- we had two babies with us. Perfect location to explore beaches & places to kayak-short drives to each. Port Austin market on Saturday morning was great. Port Crescent Park beach was nice as well as Harbor Beach. Saw all 3 lighthouses in county. Bad Axe only 25 minutes away or Dollar General 5 miles away for incidentals. And the best…ice cream shop 1/2 mile away-can walk or ride bikes! Kid friendly place. Host was exceptional, friendly, & easy to contact & responded back quickly. Would definitely stay again!

One of a kind Schoolhouse Rocks
Unique 1906 Schoolhouse has great space for large group of 14 adults on a golf weekend in the Thumb. We played Verona Hills, Bird creek and Ubly Heights and the house is ideally situated for quick access to those courses. Bedrooms are large and the main floor is enormous and full of character. Great wood moldings throughout the house. House very clean and 3 fire pits. Will return for our tournament next year. Ryan very helpful.

No issues, very unique property!
If you're looking for an interesting isolated property close to the beach, this is an awesome venue. Outside was very peaceful and the stars at night are beautiful. Only thing missing was some cleaning stuff like dish sponges and paper towels.

Amazing Experience
First let me begin by sharing: This was my first time renting a property through VRBO. It was my first time renting from anything other than a hotel or motel. It was an AMAZING EXPERIENCE! Communication. prior to our arrival was prompt, thorough, and excellent. The property itself was WONDERFUL! Pictures and written descriptions cannot possibly completely describe what awaits you. It is so SPACIOUS! Bedrooms, play rooms are all incredibly large and the main floor is like a ballroom. We spent a lot of our time together on the deck or in the garage just enjoying the ambiance and the quiet. The owner is very friendly and super service minded. I accidentally butt dialed him on our first evening in the property as I was putting contact information into my phone. Within minutes he texted to find out if we needed anything. I have to say, Ryan has set the bar as a host pretty high! Departure from the property was simple and easy as well. When I asked if there was anything else we could do, his response was: No. You're on vacation; enjoy yourselves. Truly a most gratifying experience with regard to the property, its owner, and the geographical area that we got to enjoy and explore for a week!

Perfect Property for Multiple Families
This house was a great find. There were 10 of us staying. Everyone has plenty of space for privacy as well as socialization. Our host was extremely kind and responsive. We were able to visit two beaches - Port Austin and Caseville. We enjoyed our stay.

Annual Extended Family Vacation
This is one of the best properties we have stayed at in the 8 years we have been doing this. Lots of room for the children to play and for the older youth to do their own thing. One evening we had a kite flying contest with 5 kites in the air at the same time.
Far enough out in the country for good nighttime star gazing but only a short drive to Port Austin which has 2 great swimming beaches for children and other entertainment.
A plus for those worried about well water taste/quality, Ryan trucks in city water which the whole house runs off.

Family of twelve had a wonderful stay
This was a perfect location for our three generations. The house is lovely and well-stocked for a relaxing vacation. The host was more than accommodating! He replaced a malfunctioning air conditioner in the master bedroom with a new unit the same day. We would not hesitate to stay here again!

Don’t pass this up!!!
The building itself was more that amazing, Im I would have to say it’s one of the coolest places I’ve ever stayed. The real thing I have to make mention of is the owner, to say he they were extremely accommodating would be an understatement. We had mentioned a couple outside light bulbs were burnt out, and but by the time we returned from picking up dinner they had all been replaced. Each room had it own private bathroom along with all the small appliances one we need in their own room. There’s not enough great things to say about this property, if your looking at port Austin DO NOT pass this place up.

Absolutely Awesome!
Each bedroom has everything you would find at a nice hotel. Want some alone time? Go chill in your room with complete privacy. Different bed times for different members of the group? No problem, you can sleep undisturbed while others burn the midnight candle. My 3 year old just loved running around the building being as noisy as he wanted. My older children (the wife and I, too) played a light night game of laser tag (AWESOME!). We grocery shopped, cooked our meals, used the supplied grill, and ate together in the dining room. We played pool in the game room, had ice cream on the deck... and between our times using the property we enjoyed the beaches and attractions of Port Austin! Loved it!
