西米恩山國家公園, 阿姆哈拉州, 埃塞俄比亞必遊景點

During our trek of Semien Mountains we visited the village of Geech. The village consisted of simple rustic mud and thatch huts that were surrounded by quick growing Eucalyptus and giant lobelia. Our guide, originally from Geech, arranged for us to come in for a coffee ceremony.

The family slept on a raised slatted platform above their cattle and there was an open fireplace in the centre of the hut. Despite the fire, the lofty conical roof meant it was relatively cool and smoke free. We sat on rocks draped in sheepskin and watched as the family prepared the coffee, roasting the beans over the open fire before grinding and adding to boiling water. It was a very interesting experience.

Gelada monkeys live only in the high mountain meadows of Ethiopia—an environment very unlike those of their forest- or savanna-dwelling primate relatives. This high-altitude homeland is replete with steep, rocky cliffs, to which geladas have adapted. At night, the animals drop over precipice edges to sleep huddled together on ledges.
Sheep, cows, and gelada baboons were a pretty common sight throughout our trek of Semien Mountains.

Geladas are the only primates that are primarily graminivores and grazers – grass blades make up to 90% of their diet. They eat both the blades and the seeds of grasses.

These baboon-size animals are the world's most terrestrial primates—except for humans. As grass-eaters, they are the last surviving species of ancient grazing primates that were once numerous. Geladas spend most of their day sitting down, plucking and munching on grasses. They have fatty rear ends, much like human buttocks, which seem well adapted to this activity.
