  • Day 1 of my road trip across the USA brought me to my favorite city in Florida, St. Augustine; the oldest city in the country, and easily one of the most beautiful. 👇🏽 I snapped this shot at Fort Mose Historic State Park. This incredible site is a U.S. National Historic Landmark, and the rich history of this place is something that every school should be teaching our youth. 👇🏽 Hidden away in the marshes of St. Augustine is one of the most important sites in American history: the first free community of ex-slaves, founded in 1738 and called Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose or Fort Mose (pronounced Moh-Say). Fort Mose played an extremely important role in the development of colonial North America. 👇🏽 As early as 1687, the Spanish government had begun to offer asylum to slaves who managed to escape from British colonies (the first Underground Railroad ran SOUTH to Florida from the colonies!). In 1693, the Spanish Crown officially proclaimed that runaways would find freedom in Florida, in return for converting to Catholicism and a term for men of four years' military service to the Crown. In effect, Spain created a maroon settlement in Florida as a front-line defense against English attacks from the north. Spain also intended to destabilize the plantation economy of the British colonies by creating a free black community to attract slaves seeking escape and refuge from British slavery. 👇🏽 Fort Mose was the first free African settlement legally sanctioned in what would become the United States and had a total population of about 100. The village had a wall around it, with dwellings inside, plus a church and an earthen fort. 👇🏽 The history of Fort Mose is far deeper, and far more interesting then I can convey on @Instagram so please do your own reading on it and learn more about the very earliest history of what is now the United States.

This was a very disappointing stay. The staff was rude and unhelpful, and there was no housekeeping or room cleaning provided at all. The lack of basic service made the experience extremely unpleasant. I would not recommend this hotel and would never stay here again.

Had a little trouble with a fluorescent lamp behind the bed’s headboard flickering the first night, but staff corrected it during the next day. Although the room was spacious, clean and overall comfortable, the mattress felt a little too hard for my wife and for me as we are senior citizens.

The rooms were so big, inviting and clean. I would stay here again but I did get woken up at 5 am bc you can hear everything going on in the hall. My room was by the elevator, maybe getting a room away from the elevator would help some. Also, we went here bc it has a cheap parking fee for the area, but it's a totally unnecessary fee.

Both the lobby of the hotel and our room were clean and all items in the room were fresh and clean. Towels were soft albeit a little small for adult use, but that's typical in hotels it seems. Every member of the staff that we encountered was friendly and helpful - check in, breakfast, and check out.

The room was very spacious and clean. The hot water for the shower gave a little issue but could have been a fluke. They are very serious about having the correct amount of people staying the room. My 10 year old son last minute ended up staying in the room with my husband and I and they charged me an extra $20 for the night. They offer a breakfast but we did not partake but it’s just your regular breakfast that’s offered at most hotels now. The location was wonderful close enough to old St. Augustine and next to a Winn Dixie and Walgreens in case you need anything. Also has a $10 parking fee. We would stay again. Staff was very friendly.

We were greeted with very friendly staff. We had a king suite which was so spacious and immaculate. The breakfast was nice, an upgrade from other hotels I've had in the past. Scrambled eggs, Link sausage, biscuits and gravy, oatmeal, cereal, toast, bagels and waffles. Hubby was very happy with the choice's. Location was very close to the beautiful city of Saint Augustine.

This Comfort Suites Hotel we chose to stay at for 2 nights while celebrating my Wife's Birthday, in St. Augustine. The Hotel was immaculate with well working amenities. The greatest thing about our stay here were the extremely friendly and very helpful Staff. Our room had 2 queens and a spacious sitting area with a desk, swivel chair, Sofa and coffee table. The bathroom was very clean from the ceiling down to the floor. We checked in about 4:30 with the 2 gentlemen behind the desk. Forgive me for not writing down their names or my misspelling of some of the other staff. They were courteous and professional. They wished my Wife a sincere Happy Birthday. We bought Old Town Tour Train tickets from them for our 2nd day and explained how it works also. They gave us a couple of Restaurant recommendations and we chose Schooner's and we're very happy with that. The next morning we were greeted enthusiastically by Amy the manager, and Krystalin (?) as we went for their provided Breakfast. Again a very clean and neat setup. Staff service again was spot on. After we returned Sunday early afternoon from sightseeing, I had some questions about Restaurants and the Tour Train. The 2 ladies Naomi and Krystalin (?) again very helpful. When we returned after lunch they surprised my Wife with Birthday greetings, a gift and a Birthday plaque. It brought tears to my Wife's eyes. Naomi called the Shuttle for us to take us to the Train Tour
