  • Day 1 of my road trip across the USA brought me to my favorite city in Florida, St. Augustine; the oldest city in the country, and easily one of the most beautiful. 👇🏽 I snapped this shot at Fort Mose Historic State Park. This incredible site is a U.S. National Historic Landmark, and the rich history of this place is something that every school should be teaching our youth. 👇🏽 Hidden away in the marshes of St. Augustine is one of the most important sites in American history: the first free community of ex-slaves, founded in 1738 and called Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose or Fort Mose (pronounced Moh-Say). Fort Mose played an extremely important role in the development of colonial North America. 👇🏽 As early as 1687, the Spanish government had begun to offer asylum to slaves who managed to escape from British colonies (the first Underground Railroad ran SOUTH to Florida from the colonies!). In 1693, the Spanish Crown officially proclaimed that runaways would find freedom in Florida, in return for converting to Catholicism and a term for men of four years' military service to the Crown. In effect, Spain created a maroon settlement in Florida as a front-line defense against English attacks from the north. Spain also intended to destabilize the plantation economy of the British colonies by creating a free black community to attract slaves seeking escape and refuge from British slavery. 👇🏽 Fort Mose was the first free African settlement legally sanctioned in what would become the United States and had a total population of about 100. The village had a wall around it, with dwellings inside, plus a church and an earthen fort. 👇🏽 The history of Fort Mose is far deeper, and far more interesting then I can convey on @Instagram so please do your own reading on it and learn more about the very earliest history of what is now the United States.

The two mornings we were there the juice machine was out of order. Other hotels would have poured juice in a carafe and had juice for its guests to have. Went down at 8 am and had 4 tiny muffins. Had bagels. Should have a bigger and better assortment of foods that are kept replenished at all times. Had to pay for parking. Bed and pillows were not comfortable. Had to use an key to access the elevator. The room was large. The bathroom had plenty of towels. To use certain lights in the room you had to put your key card in the slot by the door, very odd. Lots of plugs for your computers, etc. The room was clean. It is close to the St George Avenue to drive. Not walkable too long a walk, for us anyway.

The hotel is very clean and welcoming. Close to historic downtown- about 5 min drive. Would suggest buying trolley tickets at hotel and take shuttle downtown to hop on trolley. Nice breakfast and facilities. Very nice staff.

I would have preferred the room to be cleaned every day. The staff was great. The breakfast was good but we only had biscuits and gravy and orange juice on Saturday morning. Was the Saturday morning crowd more deserving than us week dayers?

I thought the hotel room was large and clean. They don't pump in artificial fragrances so that was a plus. Staff were all friendly and helpful. There was plenty of parking and the clientele was very good. It is not in close proximity to historical downtown walking wise. However we found parking in DT by Cordova street near Flagler College for 10 dollars all day. Look for the yellow sign. I thought it was an excellent value and excellent hotel. However the breakfast time seriously needs to change. Breakfast ends at 9 so it's crowded and out of yogurt by 8:30. There were no boiled eggs for those needing to control blood sugar or weight. More yogurt choices are needed. I don't eat liquid or powder eggs. Just Whole Foods.

The 1st night we arrived late and was put in room 325. It turns out there was some of mechanical device kicking on and off constantly about every 5 seconds so you can imagine how much sleep we got. The next morning we let the front desk know and they moved us to 329 two doors down. For the next couple of days, we still heard it but not as loud. When we asked about any type of compensation Amy told us it wasn't hotel policy to do so and the fact that they moved us was sufficient compensation. Gee how nice of them. They didn't even offer to comp us for the two soft drinks we purchased until I shamed them into it.
