The Fortress of Peter and Paul was built by Peter the Great. The idea was to protect the region from the attacks of Sweden. It was the fort that originated the city of St. Petersburg which later became the capital of the empire. In the center of the fortress is the magnificent Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul which contains the remains of all Russian rulers after Peter the Great, in particular the Romanov family. In the shadow of the St Peter and Paul Fortress, the birthplace of St Petersburg, is a fitting place for all things Russian military. It's by far the most un-tourist friendly place we visited in St Petersburg (nothing written in English, the feeling you are walking around a Russian jail, staff who speak no English and look like they haven't seen sunlight for quite a while) and yet if you are interested in seeing anything in the history of the Russian military then it's perfect! There is a fascinating section on the AK47, and outside are more tanks, cannons and rockets than a playboy Russian President would know what to do with. It's very cheap to get in, but remember to pay the extra 150 roubles to be allowed to take photographs.

The former city square of the Old Russian Empire, this square its famous for holding the 1905 Bloody Sunday and the 1917 October Revolution. A massive square just in front of the Hermitage Museum, its a popular destination where carriages, skaters and tourists mix up. The statue in the middle is the Alexander Column, a 50 meters tall column thats unique of its kind. This enormous column was placed in the middle of Palace square to celebrate the victory of Russia over Napoleonic France. Unlike its ancient predecessors, at the top of the column there was not a statue of the respective emperor at the time
