Hiking Echo pass section of PCT
Difficult to pass up this invitation to hike Kings Canyon. This footbridge leads to several trails in and around beautiful Zumwalt Meadows. We took the trail to the left, a 1.5 mile, easy hike we pretty much had to ourselves. Be sure to bring bug spray; the gnats were so thick at times we had to keep moving or risk getting carried away during our early morning hike. Bordered on one side by the 8,504-foot-tall Grand Sentinel and on the other by the 8,717-foot-tall North Dome, Kings Canyon's beautiful Zumwalt Meadow rests in a former lake bed created by a glacial moraine during the last ice age. An easy 1.5-mile hike circles the meadow, where black bear sightings are reportedly numerous. We were not so lucky the day of our visit. Be sure to come prepared with bug spray, dryer sheets, or a healthy splash of vanilla extract; all deter the world's most annoying bugs, gnats. They were as plentiful as the fresh air and spectacular views the morning or our visit.
