Finally made it, after a long walk, to the Freshwater lake in Dominica! A further one hour walk to go all around the lake, immersed in nature (on a very slippery path). One of the beauties of Nature Island
The entrance to this narrow rainforest slot canyon is dark and the water is cold, but it's well worth the adventure to swim on in and check out the waterfall at the back. The canyon is about 100ft (33m) long and ends where a small waterfall rushes in. The water is too deep for standing, and the current is pushing you out, so you'll be swimming upstream on the way in. You can rest on a rock ledge once you get to the falls. Don't forget to look up - ferns, vines and other leafy plants cascade into the canyon from far above. For you movie buffs, a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean 2 was filmed here. It happens around the 40 minute mark, after the pirates fall into a gorge while being chased by natives.
