Over 1000 marble temples lay clumped together atop the Shatrunjaya Hills outside Bhavnagar. Palitana is the most sacred pilgrimage site for the Jain religion, and thousands of worshipers climb the 3800 stone steps leading to the summit every day. As it is forbidden for anyone to spend the night, even the priests must make the daily climb. Palitana is open for tourists, though you will have to pay a fee to take photos. Also, look for a caretaker willing to show you the roof of his temple, where (for a few Rupees) you'll be rewarded with a magnificent view. A bit off the usual tourist route, but well worth the detour.
