Gajana is a typical Istrian village with 20 houses, surrounded by fields and woods. About 6 km outside Gajana lies the medieval town of Vodnjan, where you can still admire Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic architecture in the town centre. Everywhere you look, you’ll see many details from different eras, such as wooden doors, stone façades and wrought-iron ornaments on fountains. Typical old, narrow Istrian streets, paved with stones, lead to the church, which boasts the tallest bell tower in the whole of Istria. As transport links in Istria are good, you can hop in the car at any time and go on a day trip. After a short drive of 20 to 40 minutes through the beautiful countryside, you’ll reach the major coastal towns of Pula, Rovinj and Poreč. All three are ancient towns dating back to Roman times, where you can explore many historical monuments, such as the amphitheatre in Pula, the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč or the Church of St Euphemia in Rovinj. To cool off in the crystal-clear blue sea, visit the numerous beaches in the surrounding area.
