Fabulous location opposite the end of the Shambles and within easy walking distance of all of York’s attractions.
Only one vegetarian option on the menu and limited selection of cask ales.
There was no room cleaning for the 3 nights we stayed there - toilet rolls and drink replenishment had to be asked for downstairs. Cups were cardboard ‘to-go’ variety and there was no hairdryer. TV reception was ‘dodgy’.
We spent most of our time out and about so didn’t have breakfast at the hotel as there are a multitude of cafés nearby serving a bewildering choice of meals.
Wanted to stay her for ages but could never get booked in. It was an experience due to the pub sposedly being haunted. We had the lady Catherine room. Vert dark ornate furniture which added to the eerie feel of the room. Didn’t see a ghost but felt a presence & didn’t sleep all night but loved it. Good friendly staff & excellent full English breakfast. Would definitely recommend anyone to stay here.
I chose this hotel because of the novelty factor, I wanted something a bit different. The hotel was very olde worldy which appealed to me, however, the room we stayed in had cobwebs on the light fixture and the cover on the four poster looked like it hadn’t seen a washer in months. The staff were pleasant enough but I don’t think the room justifies the price and wouldn’t choose to stay here again.
The Golden Fleece is utterly charming, warm, and friendly. We stayed in the room just above the pub, with a view down the Shambles, under the watchful eye of the Ghost Cat, and it was an absolute delight. The floor, as is common in buildings of this age, isn't even, but the people who run the inn have made certain that the bed, the tub, and other important furniture are level, so you won't feel like you're falling off of the bed at night. The place is kept up nicely, the room was very clean, and the pub downstairs serves wonderful food. The included breakfast options are tasty and filling, and the staff was so, so friendly and kind. The only negative that we experienced wasn't the fault of the staff in any way- our first night there, some unruly patrons apparently decided to start a fight downstairs, at the front door, but it was over quickly, and the night after that was completely quiet overnight. We didn't experience any haunting activity- and my companion and I are both sensitive to that sort of thing- but we absolutely didn't mind. The view out the window, the friendly staff, the excellent food and drink- all of these make this the BEST place to stay in York, as far as I'm concerned! The Fleece is definitely going to be our first choice, when we return to York. I highly recommend it!
Great little place with loads of personality. Bit quirky but that’s why I booked it. Floors all lobsided but that was the character of the place. No TV in the room, which I was surprised at as there is no lounge, so could not watch the news. No Wifi in rooms and could not get connected downstairs in the main areas. Breakfast was superb and staff very friendly and efficient. Good stay

Wow the history of this place is fascinating tales of highway men and ghostly gools are enough to keep your interest slept without one eye open !! To be fair we never saw a thing both relieved and disappointed at the same time but great fun nevertheless , staff were great and friendly room was clean and breakfast was lovely just a pity the heating wasn’t working in our upstairs room Minster Room they did supply us with a oil heater for the night which helped a little ! Shame it wasn’t warm in the rooms because the place is cool 😎
Choose this if you really don't want to stay in a regular chain hotel. Close to shopping, pub downstairs, friendly staff, good breakfast, and a lot of history!
Quirky little proper boozer, Bedroom had 2 single beds which I requested for me and my daughter. Floor in bedroom very uneven which was to be expected because of the age of the property. Nice beers on tap small front bar and larger bar at the back. Breakfast was massive and very nice. Pub was very atmospheric however no supernatural happenings when we stayed. Very easy check in and helpful staff. Would definately return.

Old, quirky, clean and friendly, great location - lots of history
This was an awesome unique property. The room and bed could use some updating and maybe a better way to check in. Also a hairdryer and hand soap would be nice. Otherwise we enjoyed it.

Staff was friendly. Room was a bit weird. No ghosts!
Etwas „Spuki“, aber genau das haben wir gesucht; zentral in York und doch ruhig; die Geister leben in diesem Haus, aber er sind gute Geister; keine, die poltern oder Angst machen;
