Watakano Island Adventure Holidays

I have stayed at this hotel three times now, in the last three years, coming to Nagoya on my yearly Japanese vacation. The hotel is located in Sakae near a lot of shopping and restaurants, while being within walking distance of attractions like Osu Shotengai shopping street and Osu Kannon Temple. The breakfast buffet is first-rate with a lot of Japanese options as well as Western fare for the unadventurous. The staff is extremely polite, kind, and helpful as well as being very professional. I stayed on the executive floor this time so I had access to the executive lounge with free drinks and snacks as well as free health club access. However, I have tattoos so was unable to use the facilities. I think my only complaint would be to relax the standards for tattoos, but I understand the policy due to the clientele they serve so I was not too bent out of shape about it. There are different cultural rules and expectations in Japan and I happily follow them while I am here since I am not an overzealous traveler that expects the world to bend to favour my Western ways and behaviours. I come to Japan to experience their culture and not enforce mine.

Splurged to stay here at the end of our trip. $600 per night for the deluxe Japanese room with a private onsen. The pictures make it look grand, and it is advertised as a modern upscale/luxury ryokan. Upon arrival, the property was very run down. There were stains everywhere! On the walls, floor, bathroom, and in the dining room. The shower room also had mold all over it and on the door. The big item was the private onsen bath, which was rotten through at one corner and actively leaking water. Additionally the tub was covered in mold. How do you clean up between customers and not notice that? Makes me wonder if they are even cleaning it in the first place. And the icing on the cake? You have to pay for alcohol at dinner and in the mini fridge in your room, which is just ridiculous considering every single other cheaper hotel I stayed in during my month long trip offered free alcohol. After paying SO MUCH money, I was seriously disappointed in the experience. I brought up my concerns about the onsen to the staff as soon as I saw them, they said they would get back to me, and they never did. I asked another staff member later in the day to take a look who told me it couldn’t be fixed until it dries out and that I would just have to deal with it. The property refused to give me a partial refund. On the upside, the food was excellent and (seemingly) traditional. While I would still say the experience was enjoyable it was definitely not worth the price we paid for it.

Everything was perfect at this hotel! We will be back！

The hotel is smaller, more fancy. 10 min walk to Nagoya station. There’s a scent they use in the hallway, I think it’s eucalyptus? Not a fan. We appreciated the beds being made daily and the fresh towels, but it was not necessary. A little wasteful to change out the towels every day. The breakfast buffet was a set menu with 4 choices, it was good, simple. They do not have laundry on site. The staff was pleasant and friendly. The neighborhood was quiet.
