The Bonneville Hot Springs is a what the Romans used to call a Calderium (er...hot spring) surrounded by a luxury resort hotel. This being the Pacific Northwest, where you can't trip over a rock without discovering a trailhead, the resort finds itself situated at the foot of Table Mountain -- one of the premier hikes in the region.

The gravel road you see in the foreground leads back to three fantastic hikes -- Table Mountain, Greenleaf Falls and Aldrich Butte, the last of which has a mile and a half spur leading to a small set of waterfalls.

When you're done for the day, you might consider booking a room and soaking your bones in some of the healing waters. Fair warning, it ain't cheap, and I've never stayed there. But I tucked into the lobby last winter during a bitter wind and kind of fell in love with the place.

I'm bound to book a night or two before long.

In the meantime, I can gaze out from the path to the trailhead and see a panorama like this. That's one of the big perks of this location, and it doesn't cost me a dime.
