Stroll the city’s spacious landscaped gardens or row a boat over streams and lakes and learn about this parkland’s humble beginnings.

Bremen Buergerpark encompasses a sprawling 500 acres (200 hectares) in the center of the city, providing downtown Bremen with an invigorating green lung. The park contains open lawns bordered by pretty woodlands and arcades of majestic old trees. Explore the paths winding around the parkland or take out a rowboat to paddle over the small streams and lakes. Learn about the park’s history through its architectural highlights and interpretive signs.

The town of Bremen grew rapidly throughout the 19th century. Without any castle grounds or woodland estates, the locals soon had nowhere to enjoy greenery. After townspeople donated their own money to the cause, Bremen Buergerpark became Germany’s largest privately financed municipal park. It is still supported by local townspeople today.

Experience the park’s captivating 19th-century design when you wander down meandering paths that lead walkers, joggers and cyclists past pretty vistas. You’ll see heritage fountains, charming footbridges and beautiful lakeside architecture. Let kids explore the nature trail’s signposted interpretive points highlighting the park’s different wildlife and their habitats. Take children to the park’s central Tiergehege (animal enclosure) to see farm animals in a traditional thatched-roof farmstead.

Relax at the historic restaurant near the central lake and admire the Swiss-style design of the early 20th-century façade. Alternatively, make your way to the café at Lake Emmasee to have a cup of coffee at an establishment that has been serving park visitors since 1867.

Make your way to the stage at Lake Hollersee at the southern end of the park, where you might find performances of Shakespeare or local music concerts. For more active pursuits in Bremen Buergerpark, saddle up and follow the horse-riding trails that wind through the park or try a round of mini golf.

Bremen Buergerpark is located north of the city center. The best way to reach the park is via tramlines that pass its southern and southeastern borders. Bremen Buergerpark is free to enter at any time.
