It took me three visits to Madrid to finally make it to the Reales Járdines Botánicos, and it was definitely worth it. €3 entry for the public, €1.50 for students. Just like the Parque del Retiro, these gardens provide a calmer getaway from the noisier and consistently busy Paseo del Prado. It was so lovely to be surrounded by so much greenery, and the trickle of the fountains adds an additional serene note, not unlike the gardens at the Reales Alcázares de Sevilla (Game of Thrones water gardens, anyone?) and the Generalife and the Palacios Nazaríes at the Alhambra in Granada. On a hotter day especially, like the day I finally visited these gardens, the ample shade from the trees is an added bonus.
