Oaks Retreat in tranquil setting near Yosemite Valley/Merced River
Quiet and serene retreat for adults (not set up for children) located in California Gold County on ranch property - a little more than a mile from highway 140, which is the route to the west entrance of Yosemite Valley. The property is situated in the rolling hills and oak trees of Catheys Valley. The The sunrise and sunsets are gorgeous and the night sky has an unobstructed view of the stars. The historic rock walls that exist on the property are from the early gold rush days of California. Wildlife abounds on this property - deer, coyote, bobcats, birds such as turkey, hummingbirds and the California Quail.
The retreat has just been renovated and has two large comfortable bedrooms, each with a queen bed. Two twin sized rollaway cots can be provided when booking for 5 or 6 guests. There is a separate air conditioner/heater split system for each bedroom and the living area - very quiet. The open floor plan has a living room with plenty of lounging area and includes games and puzzles, flat screen TV, and WiFi. The kitchen has a full size refrigerator/freezer, a stove/oven, microwave, toaster, Keurig coffee machine & tea pot, blender, glasses, dishes, pots/pans, silverware and cooking utensils. We have 1 security camera outside facing the front door. The retreat is fully stocked with towels, hand soap, shampoo and conditioner, shower soap, linens, laundry soap, dish soap, coffee, some spices and cooking oil, toilet paper, paper towels. Housekeeping is provided before and after your stay. There is not a daily maid service. The entry is a personal key code access and there is plenty of room for parking.
Catheys Valley is a quaint small town with a restaurant, gas and convenience store and a small post office. The Catheys Valley park has the old Catheys Valley school house, an informational plaque/marker describing the founder of Catheys Valley and a blacksmith shop sponsored by the Catheys Valley Historical Society - open during special events and holidays. Raw Roots Farm are located in Catheys Valley and are worth the visit. You can also arrange an animal tour with us while you are visiting.
The Mariposa Fair Grounds hosts the Mariposa County Fair and rodeo including the demolition derby, various events and festivals and the Mining and Mineral Museum that gives you the colorful history of our gold country past.
Mariposa is a small gold rush town that now offers local antiques, gift shops and art galleries, wine and olive oil tasting, restaurants, groceries and gas stations. For historical sightseeing, the court house is the original court house built in 1854 and the only original court house still operating in California. Tours are available during certain times of the year. The Mariposa Museum of History sits in the central part of town and is close to breakfast, lunch and dinner options.
Highway 140 continues through Mariposa along the scenic Merced river to the west entrance of Yosemite National Park, the only all weather route into Yosemite and the closest entrance to the valley floor loop. Along the route there are places to stop for picnics, water rafting, beaches and of course beautiful scenic photography opportunities of the wild California poppies and the beautiful rock outcroppings. The Merced River Recreation Area in Briceburg is a great place for all of these.
Other family activities around Mariposa include the historic Sugar Pine Railroad that takes guests on a 4 mile narrated railway adventure traversing original logging rail beds by a steam locomotive; the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway will take you through giant sequoia groves, alpine lakes, wildflower fields and amazing views of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range; and multiple lakes for swimming, boating or fishing.
Yosemite National Park is set within California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. It’s famed for its giant, ancient sequoias, and for Tunnel View, the iconic vista of towering Bridalveil Fall and the granite cliffs of El Capitan and Half Dome. In Yosemite Village are shops, restaurants, the Yosemite Museum and the Ansel Adams Gallery, offering prints of the photographer’s renowned black-and-white landscapes of the area.

A perfect weekend getaway spot with my sisters. So peaceful surrounded by lovely rolling hills. The farm animals were fun to watch as well.

A very exquisite room with some sense of design, two bedrooms each equipped with an additional folding bed. It was also equipped with a washing machine and laundry detergent, Great homestay.
This is a great rental! After a long day at Yosemite, the Oaks Retreat was perfect for rest and relaxation. It was very clean, had a well stocked kitchen, comfortable beds and the bathroom had shampoo, conditioner and body wash. I highly recommend!

Cute animals, check! Beautiful, peaceful setting, check! Plenty of great restaurants within 15 minutes, check! Close to Yosemite, check! Clean, lovely home with all the necessities (Netflix, heater, washer/dryer, full kitchen, free parking) and it only took us an hour to get to Yosemite (we left before 7am though). Host is very responsive. Recommend at Mariposa:History Museum, Happy Goat restaurant, Pizza Factory, Pioneer Market). Oasis nearby is also good for Mexican food. The menagerie of animals will come to you when you stand near the fence, they’re very friendly (pig, donkeys, horse love gentle scratches). Would stay here again!
Welcoming and easy to navigate! We were seeking easy, and we got it! Everything clean, accessible, available, and everyone loved the animals over the fence! We don’t use these apps or computers a lot. Jason helped me through it in spades. Shared Yosemite with three first timers…! No crowds and beautiful Fall feeling!
Being right next to animals was really cool. The fact that it was in the middle of nowhere and no lighting and no signs saying right where it was and no saying hey look for this sign or that sign that we did in the dark trying to find the house didn’t help any.
Oaks Retreat was the perfect location for our stay outside of Yosemite National Park. In addition to spending full days in the park, we explored Bear Valley, Coulterville and the surrounding area. Highly recommend the area. The house was clean and comfortable, with "nice to have" items in the house: electronic chargers, reference materials for local establishments and places to explore.
The place was nice and clean. Spacious rooms, big kitchen. Location is very convenient going to Yosemite Park. Close to the market. We would definitely recommend it for a family.
Check in was easy. Had the door code ahead of time. Arrived early to the host finishing up watering the exterior landscape. Walk in to a livingroom/kitchen space. Comfy chairs and couch. A small desk and table. Kitchen had all the basics needed for at least 4 people (our party size). We didn't know if the coffee machine was a pot or a pod. We bought coffee for a pot. Bring pods!Stacking washer/dryer combo which we used while there. Two bedrooms with plenty of closet space. Beds were more than adequate. We spent most of our time out on the patio either talking or eating a meal. Watched the meteor shower when it was dark. Couldn't figure out how to turn off the exterior lights. They must be on a timer.Local information was helpful having ahead of time. The grocery store in Mariposa has reusable bags that you pay for. We left ours for the next guests. The bonus is the farm animals that live across the drive.
C’était une très bonne nuit, dans une maison au milieu des enclos d’ânes, de chèvres et d’alpaga. Le lieu est moderne, tout équipé et très chaleureux. Merci beaucoup pour cette nuit
This place was amazing overall! Me and my friends enjoyed staying here so much! They had greeted us with wine and the place was super cleaned and had everyday necessities if needed.
Very clean, organized house. Perfect for solo retreat to read, hike, cook, etc. only suggestion is to give the patio some love. It’s the star of the house and needs to be made more comfortable!
My friend and I really enjoyed our brief stay. We both agreed that next time we would plan to stay a few days to enjoy the property and amenities. Spotless, lovely home in a lovely setting! Jason was a pleasure to connect with, promptly answering questions and setting us up for a stress-free stay.
This was the perfect place to take a couple of day trips to Yosemite. We had all the comforts of home (Jason was sweet enough to leave us a handwritten note and bottle of wine to welcome us!), we enjoyed Mariposa one night (the Charles Dinner House and 1850 brewery/restaurant were wonderful!) and spent the next evenings cooking at home. Our furry friends across the way were great neighbors! Thanks for a wonderful time, would absolutely stay again!
We had a great stay! When we arrived there was a bottle of wine and hand-written note which was such a nice touch. There was a personalized code for us to use to get in so there was no need to meet up with someone. It was so convenient. The inside was clean and new looking and beautiful. I highly recommend! It was about an hour and a half drive to Yosemite Valley. Thank you for a terrific experience!
Everything about our stay at The Oaks was ideal - making the booking, check-in, the gorgeousl location and well-maintained house and property...the house is beautifully furnished and had everything we needed for our stay, including a well-equipped kitchen for the nights we wanted to cook in.
This is a very welcoming vacation rental and we would definitely book again if we find ourselves back in the area!
We opened the front door and my 19 year old son said "Wow!"
It's easy to make anything appear much better in photos but not in this case. The property is clean, comfortable, beautifully decorated with not a single thing out of place. The owner provided information promptly and everything was super easy. Highly recommended.

Very nice and clean house. The sheep, donkeys, alpacas and pigs across the drive were a lot of fun!
