A typical boat that can be hired for the Tanjung puting national park. I spent 4 days on the boat, it was probably the highlight of my holiday, I slept on the deck, with a mosquito net over me and listened to the sounds of the jungle at night. The river here is unfortunately brown from the open cast mining, near the beginning of the river, it feels like Indonesia is a very fragile place, and corruption sees to it that industry can get away with pretty much anything.

It’s worth noting that the hotel only takes cash (Rupiah and possibly US dollars) so take plenty with you, there’s no ATM for 20 miles! If you fly from Jakarta the domestic terminal has no facility to change money”
