A small castle already existed at this site in the 11th century, before growing into its current stature after numerous renovations and expansions. The mansion passed through the hands of many noble figures, such as Henri II de la Ferté Sennectère, Woldemar Count of Lowendal and the son of Napoleon Bonaparte.
