Depending on where you're coming from, your journey to Alpha could be simple and straightforward or it could go on forever. We've rounded up some tips that will help you start your next great escape on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Travelling on a plane can be a stress-free experience if you take the right gear. Firstly, you'll want a few basic toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and some deodorant, a fresh change of clothes and something to read. Secondly, find room in your carry-on bag for your phone and charger, your important medications and perhaps a proper neck pillow too. Lastly, be sure to bring your passport, travel documents and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of banned items differs between air carriers, the general rule to follow is avoid carrying anything sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes screwdrivers, drills, spray paint and fireworks. Sports equipment like hockey sticks, and items that could harm passengers, such as swords and guns, can't come on board with you either.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of an airplane are no place for a fashion parade. Layer your clothing and opt for shoes that are enclosed, flat and easy to slip on and off.
• You're probably aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by long periods of sitting. To lower your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and move your legs and feet often.

Being prepared before you get to the airport will make your trip to Alpha quick and painless. Below you'll find some useful tips and tricks for a speedy journey past security:

• Have your travel documents and ID handy. They'll be the first things you'll be asked to present to airport security.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Empty your pockets and remove anything metal that is likely to beep. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as bulky coats or jackets. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• All your electronics, including your laptop and phone, must also be scanned separately.
• Don't forget to remove liquids and gels from your hand luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit in a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• It's also likely that you'll need to remove your shoes to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a smart idea.
