Wherever you're coming from, flying can be an enjoyable experience if you've prepared well enough. We've put together a list of handy travel tips that will get your Bogong holiday started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane trip can be a pleasure if you've got all the right things. First things first, you'll need basic toiletries, such as lip balm and hand cream, a spare change of clothes and a good read. Next, leave space in your bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, any medications and perhaps a neck pillow as well. Lastly, don't forget to bring your passport, travel docs and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Make sure you don't have a sharp object lurking in one of the zippers of your carry-on luggage. Other prohibited items include explosive or flammable substances, such as aerosol cans and bleach, and gels and liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of a plane aren't the place for a fashion parade. Layer up with comfy clothing and pick shoes that are flat, enclosed and easy to remove.
• Most travellers have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To minimize your risk on board, stay hydrated, consider wearing compression socks or tights and keep your legs and feet moving.

• Be sure to have your travel documents and passport easily accessible. They're the first things you'll be asked to show at airport security.
• Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your belt, jacket, keys and other items in your pocket, like coins, will need to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process faster by removing them as your turn draws near.
• All electronic gadgets, including your tablet and phone, are also required to be separately scanned.
• Any liquids or gels, such as lip balm or cologne, that you want to take on board need to be in containers no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• It's also likely that you'll need to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a clever idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them safely away in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
