If you want a room with internet, find yourself another hotel, because stuff will be saying sorry and do nothing about it. I was spending time in the lobby doing my internet business instead of resting on my bed. There is nothing to eat around unless you booked your dinner 3 days ahead. We were eating food from the conbini. Other food restaurants are around 30 minutes away by foot and accepting only cash. Area is mountainous so you will be climbing the hills. Rooms are cute, in Japanese style, but convenience is a bit off. Overall I would not recommend this hotel.

I was traveling with my wife and two adult daughters. We had a family suite, with a main bedroom separated by a sliding-door screen from a traditional Japanese room with tatami mats, futon, and balcony. My daughters loved sleeping in the traditional room. The reception desk staff was very kind and accommodating, though we had some communication difficulties. We enjoyed the hotel's indoor onsen and proximity to the Hakone Outdoor Museum. The room and bathroom were clean and comfortable. The lobby and corridors are a bit plain and dark.

It is an old hotel but the staffs are very nice and helpful. We did not know there was a shuttle bus went to the hotel but the time was limited. We took the public bus with our luggages & walked on the narrow road. It was unsafe to walk on the narrow road with cars & buses passed by.

A step back in time
The woman who checked us in was the only impolite person we met during two weeks traveling in Japan. We took trains and a bus to this isolated hotel and upon arrival asked about getting dinner reservations. "No." That was all she said. Nothing about other options except to direct us to the water park, where the restaurants were mostly closed. We ate at a fast food place in the arcade. We also asked about getting breakfast the next day and got the same negative response with no alternatives. We did get breakfast on our third day and the dining room and service were lovely, but I wish that our first impression and had not been so negative. This is a strange hotel that was probably an upscale resort when it opened decades earlier. Lots of signs of aging and lack of maintenance. The room was still charming and large, with a separate tatami room overlooking the mountains. I would not recommend staying here if taking public transportation. Also, the water park looked pitiful and is not a place to go.

What a nice retreat! We truly enjoyed this traditional hotel nestled in the mountains. Our room had an excellent view, and it was so peaceful, quiet, and private. We loved sleeping on the futon in the tatami room. Also, the bath/shower room was a treat. There is an on-site onsen which we used every day of the stay. This hotel is a bit far from amenities, and at the time of our stay, the restaurant was closed. We recommend walking the 5 minutes on the path to Yunnesun, where there is a ‘Family Mart’ for basic foodstuffs. Yunnesun, is an amazing experience and highly recommended. Take the shuttle bus from Gora Station to the hotel - it hits every major hotel, including this one, even though it’s not listed on the route. It begins late and ends early, so the Tozan bus works with the Hakone Free Pass (note that the bus instructions on the hotel website are for the local bus, which is not covered by the Hakone Free Pass). The place is in need of a bit of a decor update, but otherwise spotlessly clean. The staff don’t speak much English, but are very willing to help and are exceptionally polite. We felt welcome and would gladly stay here again.

the staff was real helpful and was able to help me find some places to eat and activities to do in the area. the view was amazing and i would definitely stay here again. The pool they have was long enough for me to swim a few laps before heading up to the Onsen. The onsen itself is worth the stay. Definitely one of the stays i had during my 3 week trip through japan

A total rip-off.
For JPY 30,000 a night I expected A LOT more than what I got. This price did not include breakfast nor did it include entry into Yunessun, the water park nearby, even though the hotel website had pictures of the water park in its advertising. I actually went here thinking it was part of the hotel complex. I did actually have second thoughts about staying there due to the price and almost cancelled, then I looked at the website again and thought that the park would be fun for the family. Egregious false advertising. When I did ask about breakfast, not only did they want to charge me per adult, they also told me I'd have to pay that amount ($15) for a three-year old child! Not even a child discount! Unbelievable. The building itself is tired and dated - charging that much a night you'd think they'd make an effort to modernise the common areas - the hallways were dark and dirty and the walls was covered in paint chips. Don't stay here unless you pay less that half of what I did. Absolutely not worth it.

Comfortable Japanese style (little English)
This hotel is a bit harder to get to than it should be. The area promotes tourism with a “Free Pass” for busses, rail, cable cars and a tour boat that is not free but very reasonable and allows full use of the transportation. We arrived “near” the hotel on the H bus, but directions after that were scant. While evaluating our next step, the hotel bus just happened to stop at the opposite corner for a red light and we hopped on. It was not a scheduled stop, but with typical Japanese courtesy we were allowed to board. Later we found out that we could easily get the shuttle from Gora rail station. Walking is a must in this hilly town. Be aware that many restaurants close early even at the central rail station. Speaking and reading Japanese is highly recommended to get directions or to use the multiple remote controls in the room. Even though my wife was proficient we still googled translations for the heat and A/C controllers. Some Japanese shopowners used and recommended a translation app, Voicetra, that worked well. Overall, nice small town with GREAT view of Mount Fuji from the cable cars over the mountain.

Trekking in Hakone
Best to take Taxi there from train station. Get a multi day Hakone pass for days you plan to stay except for the first day (unless you arrive early morning). Use the baggage delivery service at the train station if you arrive in the morning. We used it from the hotel as we spent the last day still touring around and did not want to worry about baggage. We only partook in the breakfast buffet every day which worked out great. It is more of standard Japanese fair. Great walking trails around the area. We ate every evening at Aunty Pasta (follow the green awning). We walked to the Hakone open air museum from the hotel. We had a fantastic time and would stay there again. We did use the futons provided to place on beds as we are used to softer bed. Water pressure for our shower was awesome!

Great place, hotel does not match.
The Hakone area was great and the 3 day pass for transport was excellent, as was the bag delivery service from the rail station. Unfortunately the Hotel did not match. English was basically non existent, restaurant not functionally the first night and very expensive for the meal, use the local Family Mart store. The shuttle bus only went between 3 hotels and their car parks. The room was very good and the views excellent.

Best avoided. Bad smell. Rude staff.Old decor.
This place is impossible to find. Do not attempt to find it on foot or public transport. I called the Hotel and asked for directions, but was rudely told off and stated "can't speak english". When asked if they could call a taxi for me( I'll be paying of course), they bluntly said do it yourself. When I finally found the place( after 4 hours), the staff were very rude and unfriendly. I was also told I could'nt have dinner there as I did not have a reservation( I arrived there approx 545PM). There seems to be no places to eat around there, apart from the hotel where you are staying. Surprisingly though , the staff could speak english now, which previously they said they could'nt. I agree with other reviewers, the place had a musty, damp, fungal like odour. Not great for asthmatics. The smell is really terrible!

Staff were friendly, and facilities were clean, but hotel seems a bit old. Location might be hard to find, and visitors should know that it is near Hakone Kowakien Yunessun, and there is a shuttle service between this hotel and the Hakone Kowakien Yunessun.

First stay in Japan
Hotel is getting a little warm, but very clean and good sized rooms. If you do not speak Japanese be sure to have Google Translate with you as very limited English is spoken at the hotel. Beautiful area to walk and explore, just be ready for the streep hills. High speed wireless in the rooms was EXTREMELY fast (speed test was showing over 18 Mbps when I stopped the test) which was very helpful for downloading business presentations. Breakfast was very good - really enjoyed the mix of Japanese and western styles)

Mixed Review
Difficult to get to & they provided us with no info on how to get there! If going, take any bus that goes to Yunnessen, the water park, from there, catch a small shuttle that runs every 15 minutes & goes to a few hotels in the area. Wisterian is a regular stop on that shuttle. The location is far from any sort of town area with eating options or streets to stroll. Prepare to be isolated! There is a restaurant in the hotel that you can do dinner at if you speak Japanese and can get a res. No English menu! There are 2 Italian cafe type restaurants in Yunnessen & a small snack bar type place too. So you can take the shuttle down there, or walk down, to eat there. But be prepared to walk back up the hill to Wisterian if you are out past 7:20 PM when the shuttle stops. There is a Family Mart across the street from Yunnessen that we visited to stock up on packaged meals. The staff at Wisterian speak NO English. That made most everything difficult for us in terms of planning how to get out & see the sites in Hakone. Internet only works in the lobby, not in the rooms. The rooms are very big. Our room was clean, however, we stayed for 3 nights & never had any housekeeping come in except to drop off new towels. The hot spring and "healthclub" areas of the hotel are dated and tired. For the price, I think the hotel is of good value. We found accomodations to be very expensive in Japan and this was the most space for our money we got the entire 3 weeks we were there!

Better if you Speak Japanese
The room, amenities breakfast and onsen facilities were very good. This was my first experience with this part of Japanese culture and it was a both enlightening and enjoyable. The staff were very pleasant however their English was limited and our Japanese unfortunately very poor. Hence, there was some difficulties in communicating our wishes and questions. Another concern was the location of the property. One can take a bus from Hakone to a sister property at the bottom of a hill near the Okada Museum of Art. There is a free shuttle that runs up the hill until about 8 pm. After this time one must climb up and down on foot to find a place to eat in the evening. All in all a good place to stay in a lovely environment. However, the property is probably more suitable for a Japanese-speaking clientele with independent transport.

Good health/onsen resort
It is more of a resort than hotel. To really get your money worth, you should allocate more time to spend in the hotel and use its amenities like heated indoor swimming pool and public baths. Also budget for the breakfast and dinner - good experience. And spend a full day at Yunessan. There is a UFO catcher in the "games room" and I managed to get something - i.e. it is not a rigged machine. Hotel room is big. Two beds and two futans so it can fit 4 adults comfortably, with space to spare! Clean with a rustic feel. Toilet is big and clean, with a full size bath tub with "onsen water". TV limited to Japanese channels. No room service and vending machines only sell drinks. The shuttle bus only brings you to Yunessan, and three other hotels (or B&B) in the immediate neighbourhood. You can walk to a convenience store from one of the shuttle stops (Hotel Kowakien) but beware, shuttle service stops early! (7.40pm when i was there). Some public buses will stop at Yunessan, which is one of the shuttle stops. The other buses stop just outside Hotel Kowakien (no shelter, bring umbrella) Get the Hakone Free Pass to get around via public transport. Once you get the hang of it, it is quite easy.

Inexpensive and Comfortable
A great find on hotels.com. I can relate to the other reviews I read re:location of the hotel as it was difficult to find. The correct location is contrary to what is published on the website. If you look at google maps the hotel is directly North of Yunessun Water park. Drive past the water park and up the hill and you'll find the hotel on the left. The hotel was in excellent condition and we were very comfortable. Although they do not have any non-smoking rooms ours did not smell like smoke at all. Our room was western/japanese style. The hotel spa is Male/Female separated and did not allow any clothing to include towels. If you come to Hakone do not miss the ropeway at Lake Ashinoko or the ropeway that originates at the Sounzan cablecar station.

We caught a taxi $10 to the hotel as it was a little hard to find.. Once there we were convenient to the bus, they had a free shuttle to the train.. We had a lovely time in Hakone. The beds in the hotel were hard but I think that is in all hotel in Japan.. We would suggest purchasing a free pass while staying in Hakone it was great value. There are little grocery stores. The food and drinks were expensive everywhere in Hakone.
