Mossland, Irlam, Manchester. The moss here is mostly reclaimed as farmland. It shows a drainage ditch typical of this type of land. The picture was taken from the minor road that just enters the NE corner of the square (SJ 709 939) and shows the view to the SW, where the plantation of New Moss Wood has been created. This being part of the Red Rose Forest project (see www.redroseforest.co.uk for info.)

The Old River During the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal several sections of the River Irwell (which was canalised between Manchester and the point where it joined the Mersey near here)remained after its course was straightened. This is a picture of one of these sections, known locally as The Old River. Taken on a cold January day with ice on the surface.

Oilseed Rape Recently flowered oilseed rape (Brassica napus, subsp. oleifera) on Irlam Moss. The concrete structure forms the mouth of a culvert accepting drainage water from the ditch on the left.

Glaze Brook enters the Manchester Ship Canal. Here, on the border between Cheshire and Salford, the Manchester Ship Canal receives the waters of Glaze Brook (also known as the River Glaze). The Glaze drains a substantial area of mossland hereabouts and was the boundary between the ancient Lancashire Hundreds of West Derby and Salford.This latter fact is recorded on the wall of a bridge near here that carries the A57 road over the Glaze, but as the wall is made of sandstone the lettering is wearing away.This part of the Ship Canal is a canalised section of the River Mersey. The Mersey joined the canal a little way upstream of this point (to the left) and will leave the canal a little further downstream, close to where the River Bollin joins the canal.
