Dolan's Inn & Suites

"This accommodation was advertised as the Dolan Inn & Suites at 168 W River Rd with a photo of a charming two-storey house painted yellow with a white balcony. There is no building matching this description at this address. Instead we were given a room at Dolan’s Motel (132 W River Rd) a few doors down. As we arrived late at midnight in a storm, it was a scary experience to try to figure out why there was no one at the address on the reservation. The motel manager was not at the motel and just left a key in the door to our unit (not in a lock box) so anyone could have entered the room before our arrival. The Expedia listing clearly pictured the Inn & Suites building but there is a run down empty house at the listed address. The motel was definitely not worth the rate charged (photo attached). This felt like a bait and switch and we will be requesting a refund from Expedia. We do not recommend booking with any Dolan property."

"The front door was locked when we arrived at check in time but it was opened immediately by a woman who we believe is the owner. Check in was very quick. She escorted us through the main lobby and a common room which were beautifully decorated in the Victorian style and she pointed out the then-closed room where the included continental breakfast would be served in the morning. Breakfast opened up at 7:30. As we were booked for the lst ferry to P.E.I. the next day we said we likely would not be able to join them for breakfast. She assured us we'd have plenty of time to get the ferry but new to it, we decided to follow the ferry line's recommendation regarding arrival time. . She took us up the stairs to the 2nd floor (there are no elevators) and offered us a choice between 2 very nice rooms. It was storming outside when we arrived and it had worsened. We had had a late lunch so decided against going out into the storm for dinner. We did go downstairs mid evening to take a longer look around and while there were other cars in the parking lot, there was no one in the common rooms. There was no one at the front desk but there was a telephone there with instructions on how to reach the owner. Our room was nicely decorated in turquoise and white, with a flat screen TV and a comfortable Queen bed. The hotel was very clean."

"This is the perfect get-away for a couple. It's modern, bright, clean and pleasant. Reading and barbecue dinners on the deck, evenings in the hot tub under the stars. In-suite laundry and small dishwasher, but no microwave. All dishes, pots and pans, and linens supplied. In a cottage neighbourhood with quiet neighbours. View of the cove and great beachcombing. This part of the Northumberland Strait has rocky beaches but warm water for a summer swim. Close to the amenities of Tatamagouche (stores, Saturday farmers' market, chocolatier, brewery) but hidden away on a remote point (gravel road for about a kilometer). Enjoy!"

"Great house and property. It was the perfect size for a group getaway. The view was amazing. The property was large and well kept. The house was stocked with everything we needed. And the common areas were spacious to allow conversation and gathering. The spaces were clean and bright.The check in and check out process was great. And we were able to communicate with the host prior to the weekend when we had questions. Host was very responsive. Definitely would stay at this house again and would encourage others to check it out."

"The home is lovely and well appointed. Some of our guests would have liked drapes as the morning sun is bright.As we were there in the winter it would have been nice if the heat had been turned on prior to our arrival. And this would have made the homeowner aware of the heat not working in the lower wing. We tried without success.There was no dry wood available for the fireplace which would have been nice to have readily available.We also had a windstorm which pointed out that the French doors in the Master Suite (lower) were unlatched and we needed help getting them latched as it was an unusual method.All in all, we had fun. It was supposed to be a lazy vacation and would come again. The homeowner could step it up if the winter season is something he is serious about pursuing.A "house-book" available on the island may have been of assistance instead of contacting the owner or looking through every door/drawer.In the end he made it right, and we are all adults with a sense of humour and no harm was done."
