This small stone cottage, renovated in 2023, sits hidden from view behind St Mary’s church in the Derbyshire village of Darley Bridge, on the border of the Peak District National Park between Bakewell and Matlock Bath.
Enter into an open plan room with kitchenette, sleeping area and en-suite shower room (bathrobes are provided). The large living room, with exposed stone and vaulted ceiling, has bi-folding doors opening onto your private patio with hot tub and barbecue. The gardens border Clough Wood with a variety of wildlife and birds. The owners have not fenced off the garden as they own part of the forest and like to let deer graze on the lawn. Behind the cottage, you have a breakfast courtyard for the morning sun, also an afternoon sun trap, with views of Oker Hill. There is a locking shed to store bikes.
Darley Bridge has two traditional pubs both serving food. Darley bridge itself crosses the River Derwent and is a scheduled ancient monument on the Derwent Valley Heritage Way. You will have a wide range of walks and cultural visits close by, as well as the historic market towns of Matlock and Bakewell. The magnificent Chatsworth House and gardens and medieval Haddon Hall are both connected by bus and are 10-15 minutes away by car. National Trust properties of Hardwick Hall and Kedleston Hall are 40 minutes way. Bakewell is an attractive market town with a range of tourist facilities. It is the perfect place to pick up the Monsal Trail and walk to the Monsal Head Viaduct or you can hire a cycle at Hassop Station.
Matlock Bath has many attractions, including an outdoor geo-thermal spring-fed swimming pool. Reach the Heights of Abraham by cable car. Matlock has a range of independent shops, bars and restaurants. Nearby Carsington Water has a visitors’ centre, restaurant and shops; walk or cycle round the reservoir, or hire sailing dinghies, windsurf boards, kayaks, paddle boards and rowing boats as well as mountain bikes.
Local circular walks direct from your property include Chatsworth House and Gardens, Haddon Hall, Matlock walking along the River Derwent, Matlock Bath, Oker Hill, ancient Cambridge Wood (SSSI), Wensley Dale gorge, The Heights of Abraham, Youlgreave village, Stanton Moor and the ancient Nine Ladies stone circle as well as the Limestone Way. The Matlock to Bakewell bus stops at the end of the drive and will also drop you off at any of the following Peak District villages to enjoy a pleasant walk back home - Birchover, Elton, Stanton in Peak, Wensley and Winster, as well as Haddon Hall.
Darley Dale Station, a mile away, is on a heritage line run by Peak Rail and can be used in the same way as the bus service to create walks back home. Enjoy a canal boat ride at nearby Cromford and visit Arkwright’s Mill as well as the historic plague village of Eyam or take an underground boat trip at Speedwell Cavern. Book a canoe trip down the River Derwent from Darley Bridge to Matlock Bath or have an historic tram ride at Crich Heritage Village.
