Getting out of the city, hiking the trails with the dogs, and enjoying the woodstove were perfect. The abundance of passive aggressive notes all around the cabin were a bit off-putting though.
Wonderful system of trails. The property offered a nice location for a self-directed silent retreat. However, cabin had multiple flies in it when we arrived and dead moths in the kitchen sink. Swatting flies for thirty minutes prior to sleep was not a warm welcome. We were not satisfied with the cleanliness of the cabin.
Several cabins are on this site, but you would never know it! We had a great long weekend away. The cabin was cozy. There are paths through the wood that are very beautiful.
A relaxing retreat. The cabins are pretty. The trails are nice. My husband enjoyed the sauna. Our only complaint was that the bed was not very comfortable if the pullout was used, which you pretty much have to do with two people in the cabin.
The check-in process way easy and the owner was very friendly. However, the cabin online seemed secluded where we could let our dogs run around. That was not the case. It was on their property and they asked us to keep our dogs away. Also, they left notes everywhere around the cabin detailing what we could and could not use/do. For example: no big fires, no burning when windy, ask office for permission, don’t use certain rags, place this back here, etc. It felt as though they did not want us staying there. The one twin daybed had sand/dirt in it making me wonder if the sheets were changed. What I was most upset about is I paid a cleaning fee yet I had to clean the cabin before I left or risk losing my deposit. They asked us to remove the bedsheets, remake the bed with clean sheets, separate garbage and remove it from the cabin. They also suggested we could weed, vacuum, dust, and rake excess hay and debris. While I don’t mind tidying up after myself I should not have to get the cabin ready for the next guest. I travel frequently and have never had to clean this extensively after staying in someone’s private home. What is the point of the cleaning fee? I don’t expect amenities while camping but I shouldn’t have to do the work for them. Overall the cabin was nice, but the owners did not make it feel like home.

The Shire in Deep Winter
The best aspect of this place was an on-site staff that cared about their guests. We had mistakenly booked into one of two tiny cabins(single room about 300 sq ft small) that would have been ideal for one person but no good for two adults and two dogs. Be sure to specify your choice of cabin. The point: They worked at and solved our problem and turned a disaster into a very nice stay.
The grounds are tucked into Solana St Forest, are huge in their own right but offer access to the roads through the forest. I walked about four miles a day and only occasionally retraced my steps. Flat, heavily wooded with wide trails, the Shire property is beautiful, if isolated. That latter should be considered it's main draw. Very quiet and peaceful. In four days wandering the woods I had one encounter with other hikers that lasted less than a minute (and the place was fully occupied).
If you are looking for an escape from the city you will be hard pressed to find a better place that is only about two hours out of those cities.

We had such a wonderful time in this beautiful, private cabin.
The three of us (my wife, myself, and our dog) had an absolutely wonderful two night stay in the Shire in the Woods. The cabin was cozy, clean, and comfortable. It was the perfect winter weekend getaway. The trails in the forest were perfect for skiing. We hope to come back when the walkway to the island is completed.

Very cozy getaway with great trail system
Accommodations were great. They provided everything you could need for cooking and making yourself comfortable. Trail system was great. They keep it groomed so the cross country skiing was a blast.

The Shire is a welcome place
My companion and I enjoyed two nights at the clean and well-kept forest cottage, which has a shower and adequate kitchen with supplies. The family running this place is great!

Beautiful retreat
Really liked the property, was well kept and had ample supplies, including games and coffee/tea. Really liked snowshoeing around the area, and was glad to have a low cost rental option for the equipment. Would like to check it out in the summer, and would recommend to others. It did seem a little wonky in that there were signs/notes/rules written all over the cabin, but if that's what it takes to keep the cabins in as good of shape as they were, I would say its worth it.
