A rock museum, a Michelin-acclaimed restaurant and some of Munich’s best photo opportunities all converge at this vantage point high above the city.

Opened to the public in 1968, the Olympiaturm stands high above the city of Munich – more than 955 feet (291.1 meters) if you include the antenna. Along with being an observation point, the Olympic Tower is also used as a communications broadcast tower. The tower was incorporated into the outlay of Olympic Park for the Olympic Games that were held in Munich in 1972.

After purchasing tickets, take the elevator that reaches the observation deck in a speedy 30 seconds. Take in the view of Munich all around, a view that extends on a clear day out to the Salzkammergut and the Allgäu Alps. Get your bearings using the silhouette map of the city, which is mounted around the observation deck. For more adventurous visitors, there is an outdoor viewing area, but this space can become extremely windy at times.

Another attraction at the Olympic Tower is the Rock Museum, touted to be the highest of its kind in the world. This museum holds memorabilia from bands such as The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Queen. Several concerts are held throughout the year in this space.

Try the revolving Restaurant 181 for a special dining experience in Munich. Chef Otto Koch’s Michelin-awarded restaurant boasts a menu of the highest standard. Enjoy your meal while the restaurant makes a revolution every 53 minutes. Make reservations early to ensure a table. Arrive before sunset to watch the sun setting and night descending over the city.

Gifts are available from the small souvenir store at the entrance to the tower. Olympic Tower is open every day from morning until late. Parking is available for a fee at Olympic Park, and from there it is a short walk to the tower.
