  • Claflin University, located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, was founded in 1869 by Alonzo Webster (1818-1887), a Vermont minister. Webster came to South Carolina to teach at the Baker Bible Institute in Charleston training African American ministers for the Methodist Episcopal Church (today the United Methodist Church). In 1869 he received a charter from the state of South Carolina to establish a college that would prepare freed slaves for the responsibilities of citizenship. The first charter banned discrimination among the faculty, staff and students, making the Academy the first South Carolina university open to all regardless of race. We were told on check in that there is coffee available 24/7. The coffee machine was not functioning, dispensing mostly water. Several guests including my husband reported it to the young man at the desk. He said “I know” but never moved to correct it or give any explanation . No coffee at a breakfast offering is a definite fail! Hotel is dated, attempts to refurbish have been made but you know the old saying, “ You can’t put lipstick on a pig”. Positives: comfortable beds, AC worked well.

Breakfast is good. There's a computer chair and printer in the main lobby but your screen faces the check-in counter and it's not a room. No gym. Rooms are in so so condition. My sink in room 400 would not drain properly. My toilet and sink area was not cleaned properly when serviced. Very loud train in Orangeburg comes late at night and early in the morning but I suspect it's a problem for all hotels. Deodorized but not the best smelling room. Loud fan in the bathroom that runs 24x7. Personnel kind. I like to stay at a hotel all week long and when I talked to a manager they didn't have any discounts that were lower than online and the price is just to high at this point for me to stay there all week. I leave my room clean with just my suitcase in it during the week so I don't require anything extra from them as it's just myself staying there. I'll try a 2 floor hotel that costs about half at this point. I understand that this might be a logical pricepoint for them between the better hotels and the less secure two floor ones but frankly spending close to 2 grand a month for 5 nights a week doesn't make much sense to me, especially if the desk clerk or manager doesn't recognize my situation and they are left with open rooms.

We were only here for one night. The room was clean and the breakfast was good. The only bad thing is there are very few sit down restaurants. Went to Applebees and it was horrible!

The breakfast bar had a good vairiety for the price youpay, it did have two Belgium Waffle Makers which I have never seen before in a hotel. I thought that was pretty cool! The staff was very curtious and helpful.

It served its purpose as a room to spend 1 overnight. Room was clean. Bathroom outdated. Bed was okay but extremely high. Very limited parking at hotel, with an overflow lot across the access road. Not convenient, not safe because of distance and lighting and for those of us with mobilty issues, very difficult. I have a handicap placard but was of no use. I think i counted 5 handicap spots allotted. All were full. VERY NOISY! Outside noise, esp the train. Which i know they have no control over. Noise inside from other guests and staff. And from the barking dog in a nearby room, that i thought were not allowed. Wouldnt stay again.

Staff were great! Room was not. Everything that had metal was rusted. Internet TRASH! Had to change rooms twice to even get a SLOW connection. Water pressure was above a drip. I was in town for business and wouldn’t stay here again.

Staff were courteous, our room window had a security risk, the latches didn't grab anything which allowed the window to be pushed in and slid from the outside and we were on the ground floor. Front desk had the maintenance man install a stopper on the window frame.
